Instructional Assistant - General Education

Frances McClenney Elementary School, Richmond, Virginia

Starting Date: Aug 17, 2026

Terms of Employment: 9.5-month support (191 days, 7 hours)

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Location: Frances McClenney Elementary School

General Description: Duties performed typically in a school setting. Provides teaching and/or training services to students in a specialized subject. Requires frequent standing, sitting, light lifting up to 10 pounds, walking, vocal communication, hearing at normal spoken word level, and visual acuity for preparing and analyzing written or computer data.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assists teacher or supervisor with instructional activities in an exceptional education classroom or one-to-one.
  • Reinforces material already presented through special efforts and repetitions.
  • Supports students in self-care areas to build independence.
  • Prepares and maintains files and reports.
  • Performs specific duties assigned or specialized tasks.
  • Provides individual and group instruction designed to meet individual needs and supervises students in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned workday.
  • Reinforces acceptable student behavior consistently and positively.
  • Encourages proper care and use of school facilities, property and equipment; participates in curriculum development programs as required.
  • Assists with toileting, diaper changing and personal hygiene for students.
  • Escorts students when necessary and restrains out-of-control students when necessary.
  • Assists students with mobility needs.
  • Guides children in working and playing harmoniously with other children.
  • Maintains individual records for each student and displays suitable materials for educational displays.
  • Performs other related tasks as required.

Qualifications:

  • Associate’s degree or completion of 60 hours of college credits from an accredited college or university recognized by the Virginia Department of Education; or demonstrated knowledge of reading, writing, and mathematics instruction by passing the Para Pro Assessment.
  • Minimum of one year working experience as an instructional assistant preferred.
  • Experience working with children with disabilities preferred.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, time-management, and public relations skills required.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations and demonstrate excellence in business English, grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Good skills in operating personal computers and related software.
  • Adaptable to changing priorities, able to work independently or with minimal supervision, and able to handle multiple assignments simultaneously.
  • Good knowledge of and understanding of child growth, development, and paraprofessional instructional procedures and practices.
  • Considerable patience and ability to work effectively with children with disabilities, young adults, and faculty members.
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions and perform all required tasks.
  • Ability to assist in implementation of behavioral intervention programs for children with emotional/behavioral disorders and maintain student disability records confidentially.
  • Special Requirement: Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Must complete online autism training within 60 days of start date.

Pay Scale: G‑108.2, starting salary $30,000, maximum hiring salary $46,135. Benefits available.

Start Date: As approved by the School Board.
