Qualifications- Bachelor's degree in education or a related field.
- Experience using nontraditional teaching methods, preferably in an adult setting.
- Ability to teach at the pace of students and work with them one‑on‑one or in groups.
- Commitment to serving a diverse community, including low‑income families.
- Self‑motivated and able to work in a small setting in the Richmond area.
- Ability to manage and maintain a professional classroom, providing instruction to adult participants whose basic skills range from third to twelfth grade level.
- Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel for lesson planning and attendance forms.
- Working knowledge of technology to deliver distance education instruction, communicate via e‑mail, and teach basic computer skills.
- Maintain TABE and Assessment Policy certifications as mandated by VDOE.
- Maintain a professional classroom with effective management.
- Provide instruction in ABE and GED® to participants whose basic skills range from third to twelfth grade level.
- Prepare lesson plans incorporating critical‑thinking, problem‑solving, and test‑taking skills.
- Incorporate a variety of audio‑visual materials and real‑life materials such as newspapers, catalogs, books, and maps.
- Administer assessments per staff calendar and instructor manual.
- Teach to skill deficits outlined by TABE and Official Practice Test prescriptions.
- Incorporate computer‑assisted instruction and promote basic computer literacy.
- Maintain educational files and student portfolios, including placement tests, post‑test scores, and work samples.
- Submit attendance and lesson plans as outlined on the staff calendar.
- Track hours of instruction using ASPD and other forms.
- Develop and implement retention strategies and share with Program Manager to promote greater completion.
- Attend mandatory regional staff trainings, including two Saturday trainings per year.
- Engage in professional development to enhance skills.
- Maintain a working e‑mail and check messages regularly.
- Use inventory book to sign out instructional aids.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Typically performed in a school setting.
- Requires frequent standing, sitting, walking and light lifting up to 10 pounds.
- Effective verbal and written communication, visual acuity for preparing and analyzing written or computer data.
