Position: Middle School Teacher of French (Part-Time)

Position Title: Middle School Teacher of French

Position Classification: Part-time, Faculty, Exempt

Hours: 10-20 hrs/wk (hours will vary weekly based on classes and other responsibilities)

Reports To: Head of Middle School

Position Summary

St. Christopher's School, an Episcopal all‑boys school in Richmond, Virginia, seeks a Middle School part‑time French teacher for approximately 1,000 boys in Grades JK-12. The role involves teaching exploratory French and/or French 1, collaborating with colleagues to design engaging learning experiences, maintaining a positive classroom environment, and actively supporting the school’s Community Pillars of honor, integrity, excellence, and brotherhood.

Principal Responsibilities
  • Teach two sections of Exploratory French and/or French 1 to Middle School students.
  • Create a positive classroom environment in which all boys feel known and valued.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to design meaningful learning experiences.
  • Plan and prepare lessons and instructional materials that facilitate active learning.
  • Deliver individual, whole-group, and small-group instruction as appropriate.
  • Assess student progress using a variety of formal and informal data collection tools and methods and provide timely feedback.
  • Manage student behavior in accordance with best practices for teaching boys.
  • Communicate professionally and promptly with parents, students, and colleagues.
  • Engage in continuing professional growth and development, staying abreast of best practices for teaching boys.
  • Participate in school life through committee work and attendance at major events (concerts, plays, athletic contests, and other events).
  • Attend department and faculty meetings, and all‑school professional development meetings (including the year‑end Curriculum Institute).
  • Communicate efficiently with parents as appropriate.
  • Stay current with best practices for teaching boys.
  • Optional: serve as an advisor (8–10 students), coach or lead a co‑curricular activity, or handle other duties such as study halls or recess.
Qualifications and Key Skills
  • Commitment to St. Christopher's mission, Community Pillars, policies, and initiatives.
  • Commitment to best practices in education, as outlined in the Teaching Excellence Document and the Center for the Study of Boys.
  • Commitment to diversity, community, and inclusion as expressed in the Diversity and Inclusion Statement.
  • Hold at least a bachelor’s degree with a strong academic record (master’s and teaching certification preferred).
  • Minimum of three years teaching experience preferred.
  • Thorough knowledge of the French discipline.
  • Familiarity and ease with integrating technology into the classroom.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with department and middle‑school faculty.
  • Desire to introduce multiple perspectives and diverse backgrounds into lessons.
Physical Requirements
  • Must be able to circulate among students in a classroom setting.
  • Must be able to move from classroom to classroom and from building to building as assigned.
  • Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds.
  • Occasional work in poor weather conditions (temperature, precipitation, wind) during recess and carpool duty.
