General ResponsibilitiesProvide individual and small-group counseling and classroom instruction lessons to students. Advocate for students and work with other individuals and organizations to promote academic, career, and social/emotional development for all students. Observe children during classroom and play activities and confer with their teachers and parents to evaluate the children's strengths, problems, or individual needs. Consult with teachers and administrators, to assure classroom instruction lessons address both the academic and the developmental needs of students.
Academic/EducationalDevelopment
- Assists students to achieve school success and develop skills to engage in life ready learning.
- Counsels students (individual and group) in the areas of academic, career, and social/emotional issues.
- Provides programs, activities, and services which focus on helping children experience healthy academic and social growth.
- Publicizes and coordinates information to students and parents regarding student opportunities.
- Assists students to successfully use interpersonal and intrapersonal skills.
- Serves as an advocate for students and works to promote a healthy school climate and safe learning environment.
- Collaborates/consults with parents, teachers, administrators, and community resources concerning student issues.
- Assists with crisis intervention and in identifying and implementing prevention and intervention programs for students.
- Promotes effective public relations through participations in community and professional activities.
- Assists students to becomes aware of life/career choices and participate in career development activities to prepare for life after high school.
- Offers classroom instruction on problem-solving, decision making, and academic and career planning.
- Assists students with course selection (secondary) relative to their educational pursuits and career goals.
- Coordinates participation in career related activities.
- Works collaboratively with students to develop academic and career plans.
- Demonstrates commitment to improving professional competence.
- Assesses students learning on an ongoing basis and alters instruction to meet individual/group needs.
- May perform related work as assigned.
- Renders assistance to students in classroom guidance, group and individual counseling sessions;
- Assists students in course selection, in accordance with available data, to enable them to utilize their abilities more fully as they move toward more realistic goals in education, employment, and life;
- Collects, organizes pertinent data, and contributes to a cumulative record for each student;
- Maintains academic and career exploration results for each student;
- Submits and/or reviews referrals to the school psychologist, the school social worker, the public health nurse, or other community agencies with clearance by the principals;
- Assists in referrals, with the building administrator and school psychologist, for specialized service beyond those provided by the school;
- Confers with parents, in groups or individual sessions, concerning the total school program as it relates to the educational, vocational, and personal development of their children;
- Promotes effective public relations through participation in community activities;
- Undertakes, in a cooperative endeavor, the continuous evaluation of; the nature and scope of the school counseling services; the functioning of school counseling as an integral part of the total educational program; the effectiveness of school counseling services;
- Performs related work as assigned.

Skills and Abilities
, Education
Knowledge in human behavior and performance; individual differences in ability, personality, and interests; learning and motivation; psychological research methods; and the assessment and treatment of behavioral and affective disorders. Possess a strong desire to help others and possess the ability to inspire respect, trust, and confidence. Demonstrate command of Standard English, both spoken and written. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret professional journals, memos and reports.
Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of teachers, parents, students and the general public. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
Required:
Master's Degree. Postgraduate Professional Certificate with endorsement in school counseling.
