THE ROLE
Our client, a Fortune 300 utility company, is seeking an Instructional Designer for a hybrid role in Richmond, VA. This position is responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining technical training programs that support certification, onboarding, and continuing education for the System Operations organization. You will collaborate closely with engineers, system operators, subject matter experts (SMEs), and business stakeholders to create engaging, effective learning experiences across instructor-led, virtual, and e-learning environments.
The ideal candidate will have experience in instructional design, adult learning principles, and multimedia content development, with the ability to translate complex technical concepts into clear, impactful training materials. This is a 12-month contract-to-hire opportunity.
- Design, develop, and maintain instructor-led, virtual, and e-learning training programs for technical and operational teams.
- Create engaging instructional materials, including presentations, job aids, videos, simulations, assessments, and multimedia learning resources.
- Conduct training needs assessments by collaborating with subject matter experts, managers, and business stakeholders to identify skill gaps and learning objectives.
- Develop comprehensive curricula supporting utility operations, technical procedures, regulatory compliance, certification programs, and equipment operations.
- Utilize instructional design methodologies and adult learning principles to create effective and interactive learning experiences.
- Manage multiple instructional design projects simultaneously while meeting established timelines and project milestones.
- Evaluate training effectiveness through learner feedback, assessments, and performance metrics, incorporating improvements where appropriate.
- Collaborate with engineers, System Operations personnel, consultants, and cross-functional teams to ensure training content remains accurate, relevant, and aligned with organizational goals.
- Ensure all instructional materials comply with company standards, industry regulations, and applicable utility requirements.
- Research emerging instructional technologies and best practices to continuously improve learning solutions and delivery methods.
- Bachelor's degree in Instructional Design, Education, Training & Development, or related field (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
- 0–6+ years of experience in instructional design, curriculum development, training development, or adult education.
- Experience developing instructor-led, virtual, and e-learning training content.
- Proficiency with instructional design and multimedia authoring tools (e.g., Articulate Storyline, Adobe Captivate, Camtasia, Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro X, or similar platforms).
- Strong understanding of adult learning principles, instructional design methodologies, and curriculum development.
- Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Strong project management, organizational, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams and technical subject matter experts.
- Preferred: Master’s degree in Instructional Design, Education, Training & Development, or related discipline.
- Preferred: Experience supporting utility operations, power generation, transmission, distribution, or system operations organizations.
- Preferred: Familiarity with technical certification programs, regulatory compliance, or safety training.
- Preferred: Experience developing technical training for engineering or operations environments.
- Preferred: Knowledge of utility industry standards, procedures, and operational best practices.
