Position: Counselor I

St. Joseph's Villa is currently recruiting Counselor I roles to join the team at the Villa Education Center. The Counselor I plays a key role in working under the supervision of the Director of Program Operations and in close collaboration with the classroom teacher and instructional assistant. This position supports students with a range of special needs by implementing individualized lesson plans and behavior strategies based on Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and other evidence-based teaching methods.

All work is performed in accordance with the Villa’s mission, values, and guiding principles, with a focus on safety, effectiveness, and the highest ethical standards.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of ABA principles, basic classroom procedure and appropriate intervention procedures with socially, emotionally, cognitively and developmentally challenged children ages 2 - 22. Basic academic skills necessary to effectively perform the responsibilities of the position. Able to creatively organize and implement a variety of supplemental programs for the students. Knowledge of basic first aid procedures. Knowledge of appropriate methods of physical restraint and able to implement those methods appropriately.

Able to appropriately use proprietary software. Able to work effectively in a collaborative, shared leadership environment. Able to be flexible and appropriately handle stressful situations. Able to be an effective role model.

Hourly Rate: $17.70

Work Shift:

Monday - Friday; 7:30am - 3:30pm

FLSA Status:
Non-Exempt

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide direct supervision and support to students at all times.
  • Implement individualized education and behavior plans under the guidance of the classroom team.
  • Assist with daily activities, including personal care such as feeding, toileting, hygiene, and use of feeding tubes if required.
  • Document student behaviors, incidents, and progress as required.
  • Use approved behavior management techniques to support students in crisis.
  • Serve as a positive role model by modeling appropriate behavior, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Transport students to community activities as needed.
  • Attend required trainings and team meetings to ensure ongoing professional development and compliance with program expectations.
  • Collaborate in a team-based environment to support a positive and effective learning space.
  • Support classroom needs by notifying teachers when materials or adjustments are necessary.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum age of 21.
  • Experience working with students with special needs preferred.
  • Bachelor's degree in Education or a related field is a plus.
  • Valid Virginia driver’s license with a clean driving record.
  • Basic computer skills including Microsoft Word, Outlook; experience with data entry systems is preferred.
