Virginia Peninsula Community College is a two-year institution of higher education established as a part of a statewide system of community colleges. It primarily serves the residents of the cities of Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson, and Williamsburg, and the counties of James City and York.
Virginia Peninsula seeks faculty to teach up to 1,500 hours per year as an Adjunct Instructor in the Workforce Development Department. The teaching load is based upon student enrollment and staffing needs. Applicants will be part of a standing pool from which the College will draw to meet scheduling needs. The adjunct faculty appointment contains no guarantee of continued employment. Instruction may be during the day, evening, or weekend.
The Adjunct Structural Fitting Instructor directly supports Workforce Development’s Marine Trades Training (MTT) Structural Fitting program. This position helps meet all training needs for the Workforce Development Structural Fitting department. It instructs students in identifying and performing appropriate safety practices and procedures, including ensuring all weld lines are clear and safe, recognizing, identifying, and properly using structural fitting tools and equipment.
The instructor also teaches operating and troubleshooting basic maintenance on structural fitting equipment, understanding and identifying job requirements, and exhibiting workplace readiness through effective communication and work ethic. Students learn ship structures, ship orientation, and ship traversing terminology, blueprint reading, math and measurement skills, and the use of structural fitting tools and steel shapes to complete effective repairs and building of steel ships, fairing deck plates, and installing stiffeners.
Other duties may be assigned by the Director.
May be required to perform other duties as assigned and to assist the agency or state government in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
Qualifications- High School graduate or equivalent
- Significant work experience within the welding and structural fitting field
- Prior experience delivering or developing training
- Passion for the discipline and commitment to a student-centered philosophy supporting academic excellence for diverse groups of learners
- Excellent interpersonal skills in communication with students, colleagues, staff and administrators, individually or as part of a team
- Willingness to serve the needs of traditional and non-traditional students from a variety of backgrounds and age groups
- Ability to modify instructional methods and strategies to meet diverse student needs when appropriate
- Plan and organize instruction to maximize documented student learning
- Adopt methods that fairly measure student progress toward learning outcomes
- Evaluate student performance fairly and consistently, and return student work promptly to promote maximum learning
- Maintain accurate records of student progress and submit final grade rosters to the division administrator each semester according to established deadlines
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Experience or strong interest in teaching and inspiring adult learners to fulfill the College’s mission of changing lives and empowering students to succeed
- Must be able to work at all campus locations
- Community college teaching experience
- Teaching experience in online or hybrid and traditional face-to-face classroom modalities
- Demonstrated proficiency and experience in using instructional technologies and learning management systems (e.g., Canvas) with the ability to use technology to enhance teaching and the educational experience
