Workforce Development HVAC Instructor
Virginia Peninsula Community College is a two‑year institution of higher education that primarily serves the residents of the cities of Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson, and Williamsburg, and the counties of James City and York.
Virginia Peninsula seeks faculty to teach up to 1500 hours per year as an Adjunct Instructor in the Workforce Development Department. The teaching load is based on student enrollment and staffing needs. Applicants will be part of a standing pool from which the College will draw as scheduling needs dictate. The adjunct faculty appointment contains no guarantee of continued employment. Instruction may be during the day, evening, or weekend.
This position will teach NCCER Core, HVAC Levels 1 and 2 courses in Workforce Development.
The Adjunct HVAC Instructor directly supports Workforce Development’s HVAC program. This role meets all training needs for the department by instructing students to perform major and minor HVAC repairs and installations, to care for and properly use HVAC tools and equipment, and to follow shop safety standards. Additional duties include maintaining program inventories, ensuring sufficient consumables and supplies and equipment, preparing all instructional materials, monitoring HVAC lab and equipment needs, securing instructional aids, and establishing a working relationship with the HVAC industry to keep training relevant and create a pipeline of jobs for graduating students.
Other duties may be assigned by the Director.
Essential functions:
- Design and delivery of instruction for day and evening classes.
- Deliver courses that cover knowledge of HVAC systems and refrigerants.
- Responsible for student assessment and grading.
- Maintain adequate on‑campus presence.
- Provide timely communication with students, staff, and administrators of the College.
Special Assignments:
May be required to perform other duties as assigned or assist the agency or state government in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
- High‑school graduate or equivalent.
- Significant work experience within the HVAC field.
- Prior experience delivering or developing training.
- Passion for the discipline and commitment to a student‑centered philosophy supporting academic excellence for diverse learners.
- Excellent interpersonal skills in communication with students, colleagues, staff, and administrators.
- Willingness to serve traditional and non‑traditional students from a variety of backgrounds and age groups.
- Ability to modify instructional methods and strategies to meet diverse student needs.
- Plan and organize instruction to maximize documented student learning.
- Adopt methods that fairly measure student progress toward learning outcomes.
- Evaluate student performance fairly and consistently; return work promptly to promote learning.
- Maintain accurate records of student progress and submit final grade rosters to the division administrator each semester within established deadlines.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Experience or strong interest in teaching and inspiring adult learners to fulfill the College’s mission.
- Must be able to work at all campus locations.
- Community college teaching experience.
- Teaching experience in online, hybrid, or traditional face‑to‑face classroom modalities.
- Proficiency and experience using instructional technologies and learning management systems (e.g. Canvas) to enhance teaching.
- Demonstrated ability to measure, assess, and align student outcomes within courses or programs.
