Job Description

Exceptional Education Teacher
- Adapted Curriculum (K-12). 9.5‑month (200 Day) exempt position. Assigned School with School Principal as immediate supervisor.

General Description:

Duties performed typically in a school setting, providing teaching and/or training services to students with disabilities. Occasional movement of students in wheelchairs and other mechanical devices may be required. Occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds. Work requires stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, and both verbal and written communication.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Effectively communicate and promote the mission, philosophy, and curriculum of the Autism Specialty classroom to parents, staff, and community partners.
  • Participate in professional development and technical assistance sessions, demonstrating consistent implementation of competencies such as alignment of IEP goals with ASOL, development of a safe learning environment, and evidence‑based practices including positive behavior supports, person‑centered planning, functional communication instruction, applied behavior analysis, and data collection.
  • Work with special education students who have intellectual disabilities and or Autism, applying instruction, learning theory, and teaching methodology.
  • Meet communication needs of students, including those with limited or no verbal skills.
  • Develop, implement, and assess instructional strategies to ensure all students actively engage in learning.
  • Create coherent lesson plans aligned with ASOL, Standards of Learning, and IEP goals, using appropriate teaching strategies, technology, formative and summative assessments, and data‑based interventions.
  • Provide differentiated instruction in functional academic and daily living skills, social competence, self‑management, self‑advocacy, community and vocational skills.
  • Follow a standardized protocol for assessing entry‑level skills, developing IEPs, using data tools to measure progress, and providing skill‑specific instruction with behavioral analysis and environmental supports.
  • Meet regularly with autism mentors and technical assistance providers to discuss curriculum, review student progress, and identify professional development needs.
  • Serve as case‑manager and instructional leader, supervising and training instructional assistants and collaborating with related service personnel to ensure a cohesive program aligned with evidence‑based practices.
  • Demonstrate respectful communication with families and community partners, including parents in all aspects of the program such as the IEP process and person‑centered planning.
  • Provide parent training and linkages to community resources as appropriate.
  • Adhere to all federal, state, and division mandates related to IEP development, assessments, and other special education procedures.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Physical Requirements

Frequent standing, walking, bending, and occasional lifting of up to 20 pounds.

Qualifications
  • Licensed to teach in the Commonwealth of Virginia or eligible for licensure in Special Education Adapted Curriculum.
  • Bachelor’s degree in special education with an endorsement in adaptive curriculum.
  • Three years of experience teaching students with autism, intellectual disabilities, or other low‑incidence disabilities; knowledge of transition processes is preferred.
  • Three years of experience collaborating with parents to discuss student progress and organizational skills in exceptional education programs.
  • Three years of collaborative experience with coworkers, staff, and community representatives, and scheduling and conducting IEPs.
  • Bilingual skills in Spanish are a plus.
  • Ability to perform job expectations independently and collaboratively.
Salary

Teacher's salary scale: $58,708 to $109,226 Per Year.
