Counselor and Senior Counselor

The Virginia Commonwealth University, School of the Arts (VCUarts) seeks highly responsible and motivated counselors and senior counselors to assist with and provide leadership during the Summer Pre‑College Program for high school students. The program aims to provide a superior quality experience for each participant.

July 12 - 31, 2026

• Serve as ambassadors of the university and the School of the Arts to visiting students and their parents.
• Attend all training sessions and meetings with the Head of Residence Life and the Program Director.
• Escort students to and from campus housing, meals, morning and afternoon classes, and plan and run evening social activities during the three‑week program.
• Chaperone field trips and supervise assigned group activities in the evenings and on weekends.
• Maintain daily on‑campus presence with students throughout weekdays and weekends.
• For Senior Counselors: motivate a team of counselors and resolve student and counselor concerns.
• Lead and monitor student safety throughout the program.
• Monitor behavior, convey university and residence life policies, and address minor infractions and misunderstandings clearly and assertively.
• Provide leadership and foster a respectful, professional, and civil environment.

• Ability to walk long distances for extended periods.
• Excellent interpersonal skills, patience, and sensitivity to meet students’ needs at all times.
• Clear understanding of university and residence life policies and ability to monitor behavior and convey policies.
• Ability to address minor infractions and misunderstandings clearly and assertively.
• Leadership ability and close monitoring to ensure student safety.
• Strong organizational and communication skills.
• Valid driver’s license and transportation.
• Demonstrated experience fostering an environment of respect, professionalism, and civility with diverse faculty, staff, and students.

• VCU School of the Arts graduate students, rising junior or senior undergraduate students, and alumni.
• Previous experience as a residence hall assistant.
• Experience working at summer camps for high school students.
• Ability to live in the dormitory for the duration of the program.
• Teaching experience.
