The Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center welcomes applications for several tenure-eligible faculty positions. We seek faculty members who are conducting impactful studies with research interests in the cancer field. Preference is given to those focusing on translational oncology, immuno-oncology, and drug discovery including medicinal chemistry and structural biology. The faculty will also support the department with teaching responsibilities at the graduate level and mentoring students and/or trainees as appropriate.

The center aims to reduce the state cancer burden for all Virginians by addressing the confluence of biological, social, and policy drivers through high-impact, cutting-edge research. It promotes person-centered care across prevention to survivorship, community integration, and training the next generation of community-centric researchers and healthcare professionals.

Duties & Responsibilities Teaching

The faculty member shares a deep commitment to effective instruction, creation of innovative courses, and mentoring of students in research, outreach, and professional development. They demonstrate leadership in developing techniques to meet differing learning styles and intellectual interests, especially in interdisciplinary research areas. The faculty member will contribute to the teaching mission, be engaged in training students and faculty, deliver lectures, contribute to course development, and supervise capstone projects and dissertations.

Research

The faculty member will contribute to VCU’s national reputation through research and scholarship, including extramural funding, high-quality publications, citations, and national recognition through awards and committee leadership. They will publish in peer-reviewed journals and submit grant applications for extramural funding in translational oncology, immuno-oncology, and/or drug discovery including medicinal chemistry and structural biology. A vigorous, extramurally funded research laboratory is expected.

The faculty member will direct the lab, comply with regulatory requirements, supervise personnel, write and submit multiple grant applications, and publish manuscripts during the academic year. They will serve as PI on peer-reviewed grants and comply with all institutional and sponsor terms and conditions. Participation in Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center core grant preparation is expected.

Service

Faculty members will serve on departmental, college, and/or university committees as necessary and in a professional capacity in their field (e.g., reviewer, conference organizer).

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications
  • PhD, MD, or MD/PhD in basic, translational, or clinical sciences
  • Extensive cancer-relevant research experience
  • Proven extramural funding track record
  • Extensive publication experience
  • Proven trainee and faculty mentorship skills
  • Track record working in multidisciplinary fields
  • Experience in coordinating collaborative grants and managing trans-disciplinary research
  • Demonstrated ability to foster an environment of respect, professionalism, and civility with faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working in a matrix environment within academic medicine
  • Proven success collaborating with multidisciplinary teams
