Tidewater Community College has served South Hampton Roads for 50 years. It has grown from a single campus into a regional educational and economic force. TCC is the largest provider of higher education and workforce services in Hampton Roads, enrolling nearly 25,000 students in 2024-25. Founded in 1968 as part of the Virginia Community College System, Tidewater Community College services South Hampton Roads with 4 campuses in Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Virginia Beach, 7 regional centers and 2 important cultural institutions.

The major emphasis is on teaching and inspiring students to learn by working in classrooms, laboratories, individual conferences, and related activities to help students develop their interests and abilities to the fullest capacity to become better persons, better workers, and better citizens. Faculty responsibilities include office hours, committee work, student activities, community activities, student advising, and professional activities.

The faculty member is responsible for teaching discipline courses in which they have specific training or competence. Responsibilities include planning, organizing, teaching, and providing feedback to students to promote and direct student learning in both classroom and online environments. The faculty member engages students outside of class to support curriculum and co‑curriculum, provides thorough and timely feedback, develops curriculum, collaborates with colleagues, assists in faculty selection and development, and leads instructional activities of the discipline.

Responsibilities
  • Teaching:
    Responsible for creating a learning environment that facilitates students’ acquisition of knowledge and skills.
    • Instructional Design:
      Utilize and distribute established course syllabus; participate in textbook selection; design and implement assessment strategies that effectively measure student achievement.
    • Instructional Delivery:
      Align course activities with learning outcomes; employ active learning strategies; use appropriate technology; provide prompt and meaningful feedback.
    • Instructional Effectiveness:
      Deliver instruction aligned with learning outcomes; participate in student instruction surveys; conduct timely assessments; analyze student ratings and implement action plans.
    • Instructional Expertise:
      Maintain currency in assigned teaching discipline(s) and instructional technology.
  • Scholarly and Creative Engagement:
    Participate in conferences, workshops, scholarly research, publications, and grant activity related to the faculty’s teaching discipline(s).
  • Institutional Responsibility:
    Fulfill institutional commitments—including office hours, academic advising, committee and meeting participation, attendance reporting, timely grading, policy adherence, and collegial collaboration.
  • Service:
    Participate in college representation, college citizenship (committee membership), and community citizenship activities. Service may require work during day, evening, weekend, or distance‑learning programs.
Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government in case of emergency declaration by the Governor.
