Teaching Faculty – Surgical Technology (12‑Month Instructor)

Location:

Virginia Beach, Virginia. 12‑month full‑time instructor, serving as Program Director for the Surgical Technology Program.

Key Responsibilities

  • Teaching:
    Create a learning environment that facilitates students’ acquisition of knowledge and skills. Responsible for the following components:
    • Instructional Design
      :
      Use and distribute established course syllabus via the college’s i‑INCURR system, participate in textbook selection, design and implement assessment strategies to measure student achievement.
    • Instructional Delivery
      :
      Align course activities with learning outcomes, employ active learning strategies and technology, provide timely and meaningful feedback.
    • Instructional Effectiveness
      :
      Conduct assessments, analyze student ratings, and develop action plans.
    • Instructional Expertise
      :
      Maintain currency in the discipline and instructional technology.
  • Scholarly and Creative Engagement
    :
    Participate in conferences, workshops, scholarly research, publications, and grant activities related to the discipline.
  • Institutional Responsibility
    :
    Publish and hold office hours, serve as advisor, participate in department, pathway, committee, and college meetings, maintain accurate attendance reports and grades, adhere to policies.
  • Service
    :
    Commit to student, college, and community service. Service activities categorized as:
    • College representation – direct connection to faculty role.
    • College citizenship – committee membership without leadership.
    • Community citizenship – community involvement as a citizen employee.
  • Accreditation Support and Outcomes Assessment
    :
    Lead planning, development, evaluation, and continuous improvement.

    Responsibilities include:
    • Leadership of program planning and continuous improvement.
    • Outcomes assessment – student retention, graduation rates, credentialing exams, placement.
    • Curriculum design and delivery alignment with ARC/STSA standards.
    • Accreditation reporting, self‑study preparation, and status maintenance.
  • Accreditation Documentation, Advisory Participation, and Program Quality
    :
    Maintain accurate academic and program records, coordinate with advisory committee, clinical affiliates, and accrediting agencies. Ensure policies and practices meet accreditation standards.
Special Assignments
  • May be required to perform additional duties as assigned.
  • May assist the agency or state government during an emergency declaration by the Governor.
Qualifications
  • Applicable to all teaching faculty positions:
    • Willingness to design, implement, and improve curriculum.
    • Ability to adapt teaching strategies for diverse student populations.
    • Use of formative and summative assessments.
    • Experience or willingness to employ proven teaching strategies.
    • Willingness to use emerging technologies and alternative delivery methods.
    • Effective interpersonal communication skills.
    • Commitment to continuous professional development.
    • Teaching experience preferred, especially at the community college level.
  • Applicable specifically to this position:
    • Associate degree in Surgical Technology and a bachelor’s degree in a health profession discipline.
    • Professional credentials required (e.g., Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) or equivalent); current certification.
    • Minimum four years of professional surgical technology experience and minimum two years of teaching or educational experience in a CAAHEP‑accredited program.
    • Eligibility to serve as Program Director per ARC/STSA guidelines.
    • Demonstrated competencies in curriculum oversight, program evaluation, accreditation compliance, and leadership.
    • Required knowledge and skills necessary to ensure program effectiveness and student learning outcomes.
