Virginia Peninsula Community College is a two-year institution of higher education established as a part of a statewide system of community colleges. It primarily serves the residents of the cities of Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson and Williamsburg, and the counties of James City and York.
Virginia Peninsula seeks faculty to teach up to 1,500 hours per year as an Adjunct Instructor in the Workforce Development Department. The teaching load is based on student enrollment and staffing needs. Applicants will be part of a standing pool that the college draws on as scheduling needs dictate. The appointment contains no guarantee of continued employment. Instruction may be during day, evening or weekend.
The position will teach NCCER Core, Electrical Levels 1 and 2 courses in Workforce Development.
The Marine Electrician Instructor directly supports Workforce Development’s Residential Marine Electrician program. The instructor meets all training needs for the Marine Electrician department and teaches students how to use basic hand tools, ruler reading/basic measurement, cableway and cable installation. The instructor has knowledge of cable cut‑in and hook‑up practices, ESD and Electrical Safety, and the NNS Absence-of-Voltage check. Basic electrical theory knowledge is also required.
Other duties include maintaining program inventories, ensuring sufficient consumables and supplies, preparing instructional materials, monitoring lab and equipment needs, securing instructional aids and materials, and establishing relationships with the Marine Electrical industry to keep training relevant and create a pipeline of jobs. The director may assign additional duties.
- Design and deliver instruction for day and evening classes.
- Deliver courses that cover residential electrical theory knowledge.
- Responsible for student assessment and grading.
- Maintain adequate on‑campus presence.
- Provide timely communication with students, staff, and administrators.
May be required to perform other duties as assigned and may assist the agency or state government during an emergency declaration by the Governor.
Required Qualifications- High school graduate or equivalent.
- Significant work experience within the electrical field.
- Prior experience delivering or developing training.
- Passion for the discipline and commitment to a student‑centered philosophy supporting academic excellence for diverse learners.
- Excellent interpersonal communication skills with students, colleagues, staff and administrators.
- Willingness to serve the needs of traditional and non‑traditional students from diverse backgrounds and age groups.
- Ability to modify instructional methods and strategies to meet diverse student needs.
- Plan and organize instruction to maximize documented student learning.
- Adopt fair assessment methods measuring student progress toward learning outcomes.
- Evaluate student performance fairly and consistently and return work promptly to promote maximum learning.
- Maintain accurate records of student progress and submit final grade rosters to division administrators each semester per deadlines.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Experience or strong interest in inspiring adult learners to fulfill the College’s mission to change lives and empower students to succeed.
