Position:
Writing Center Instructional Assistant – Role Code 29111‑SW, Non‑exempt, Pay Band 03, Full‑time/Part‑time (Part‑time) –

Location:

Williamsburg, Virginia

Overview

Provides individual and small group instruction and assistance to currently enrolled students who encounter writing‑related problems in their VPCC courses. The incumbent offers a variety of writing‑related instructional resources, collaborates with the Tutoring Center instructional assistants and the Tutoring Coordinator, and serves as a liaison between the Writing Center, the English Department faculty, and other college programs.

Responsibilities
  • Deliver writing instruction and support to students in small groups and one‑on‑one settings.
  • Coordinate with faculty and other campus units to integrate writing instruction into course curricula.
  • Assist with scheduling and administration of tutoring services using software such as Navigate and Brainfuse.
  • Maintain accurate records of student interactions and progress.
  • Act as a Campus Security Authority (Clery Act) and Responsible Employee (Title IX) when applicable.
Required Qualifications (KSA's)
  • Demonstrated writing, teaching, and/or tutorial experience at the high school or two‑year college level.
  • Experience working with adult learners and underserved populations.
  • Experience with learning management systems such as Canvas or Blackboard.
Knowledge
  • Proficiency in composition and rhetoric; background in English, English education, or related Liberal Arts programs preferred.
  • Familiarity with word processing, spreadsheet software, databases, and electronic communications.
Skills
  • Excellent communication and strong listening skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and time‑management skills.
  • Analytic problem‑solving skills.

  • Demonstrate patience, flexibility, and the ability to vary teaching methods according to student needs.
