Institution:
Southside Virginia Community College, Brunswick Division (Location )
Hiring Range: $793.00 – $1098.00 hourly; salary depends on rank.
Telework: subject to change based on business needs.

Work Schedule:

Fall 2026 Semester (August 17 – December 15, 2026). Hybrid format (in‑person on campus and online components).

Teaching Locations:

  • Christanna Campus – Alberta, VA;
    Tuesdays, 2:30 PM – 4:50 PM.
  • John H. Daniel Campus – Keysville, VA;
    Mondays, 1:00 PM – 3:25 PM.

Southside Virginia Community College (SVCC) was established in 1970 and is one of 23 colleges in the Virginia Community College System. SVCC serves a wide region and offers associate degrees in a variety of programs.

Help SVCC students build strong foundations in drawing, creativity, and visual expression by teaching ART 121 Foundations of Drawing. This is a UCGS transfer course designed to develop basic drawing skills and an understanding of visual language through studio instruction and lecture.

Course Content &

Specific Duties
  • Introduce and demonstrate concepts such as line, proportion, space, perspective, value, and composition.
  • Apply drawing concepts to subject matter including still life, landscape, and the figure.
  • Instruct students in the use of various media, such as pencil, charcoal, and ink wash.
  • Organize field trips and gallery assignments as appropriate to the curriculum.
  • Deliver instruction in a hybrid format, ensuring high‑quality course materials align with college standards.
  • Maintain engagement through the college’s Canvas Learning Management System (LMS) for the online portion of the course.
  • Monitor and document class attendance in compliance with college policies, maintaining accurate records and communicating with students and necessary departments as needed to support academic success.
Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned and assist the agency or state government in emergencies declared by the Governor.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Studio Art.
  • Clear demonstration of drawing skill adequate to teach this course.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Interpersonal communication skills; ability to write syllabi and exams.
  • Ability to develop learning strategies, curriculum, and assessments.
  • Ability to work with students of varying abilities from diverse backgrounds.
  • Understanding of and commitment to the mission of the community college and student success.
Additional Considerations
  • Teaching experience at the college level, specifically with face‑to‑face and online/hybrid modalities.
  • Competency using instructional technologies such as SMART boards, Zoom, and Canvas Learning Management System (LMS).
  • Experience working with community college students.
  • Demonstrated commitment to student engagement and academic success.
