Position Overview
Paralegal Adjunct Faculty – District:

Seeking applicants available for on‑campus and online instruction on various days and times. Adjunct positions are appointed on an as‑needed, course‑by‑course and/or semester basis.
Mountain Empire Community College is a comprehensive two‑year college serving residents of Lee, Scott, Wise, and Dickenson counties and the City of Norton. MECC is part of the Virginia Community College System.
This position is in the discipline of Legal Administration. Teaching formats include face‑to‑face and online. Adjuncts may teach up to 12 credit hours in the fall and spring semesters and up to 8 credit hours during the summer session. The teaching load is based on enrollment and college needs. The contract contains no expectation of continued employment.

This position is an employee in a non‑restricted position per DHRM policy 2.20.
Duties & Responsibilities- Teach specific classes in Legal Administration in classroom or virtual environments to students with diverse academic backgrounds.
- Develop course syllabi and instructional materials, delivering high‑quality instruction, fostering a supportive and inclusive learning environment, and actively contributing to the academic, professional, and community life of the college.
- Maintain records, assign grades, and assess student progress.
- Adhere to MECC policies, procedures, and regulations while emphasizing instructional excellence through innovative teaching practices, curriculum development, and assessment.
- Maintain current competence in Legal Administration or a related specialization and commit to continuous professional growth aligned with the college’s mission and goals.
Faculty must meet assigned classes regularly; submit required records and reports routinely; teach prescribed courses with the established texts; and adhere to the statement on professional ethics in accordance with college policies, procedures, and regulations.
Special AssignmentsMay be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
Qualifications- Associate’s degree or higher in Legal Administration plus two or more years of directly related experience, preferably as a paralegal.
- Demonstrated ability to deliver coursework electronically in an online environment and utilize multiple teaching strategies in addition to in‑person instruction.
- Understanding of diverse student populations and ability to create a sense of belonging, support, and engagement in curriculum and teaching.
- Proficiency in computers, relevant software applications, and the institution’s learning management system (LMS).
- Bachelor’s degree in Paralegal Studies or higher.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to incorporate technology into instruction.
