Sabot School, a progressive preschool–Grade 8 school in Richmond and a leader in the Reggio Emilia Approach, seeks a creative and flexible substitute teacher to oversee class instruction when a faculty member is absent.
Under the supervision of the appropriate Program Director that they are directly working for, the Substitute Teacher is available on an as needed basis and is responsible for carrying out the lesson plans and duties of the teacher for whom they are substituting. As such, the Substitute Teacher works with the students and faculty to ensure a safe, supportive learning environment that reflects the mission, values and policies of Sabot School.
Substitute Teachers assume a variety of educational and support responsibilities. At Sabot, attention is given to individual learning styles, social-emotional skills, and positive identity development. Teachers model a patient, compassionate, open-minded approach to relating to children and adults. Substitute Teachers are called on to support the class culture with routines and expectations defined by Sabot’s mission and values.

- Meets and instructs assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated
- Maintains a learning environment conducive to effective learning
- Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, materials, equipment, and facilities
- Provides a positive and safe environment for students—physically and emotionally—that reflects effective classroom management strategies
- Maintains a professional, positive, and constructive relationship with colleagues, administrators, and staff
- Actively participates in and supports the behavioral guidelines of the School, carrying them out with respect for the integrity of each child
Fulfills additional duties when asked (e.g., playground supervision, lunchroom supervision) - Maintains communication with the administration and faculty regarding the class’s progress and any issues or concerns that may have arisen
- Develops and maintains professional, collaborative, and collegial relationships with faculty and staff to the benefit of students and classes
Provides effective supervision of students to promote a safe and healthy environment and School experience - Supervises students outside of the classroom (e.g., during lunch, recess, or breaks)
Maintains a professional working atmosphere and confidentiality of information related to staff, children, families, and co-workers - Helps to uphold School policies, protocols, and expectations
- Reports to the Program Director at the beginning and end of each day
- Performs related duties as assigned by the Program Director
Education & Experience
While a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in teaching, education or related field with teaching experience is highly preferred, we are open to other degrees with professional experience working with children in a safe, supportive learning environment. For all applicants, some experience with children in a professional setting is required.
