Position: 12 month - College Librarian

Position Overview

College Librarian – a professional faculty role (Exempt) at Southside Virginia Community College in Brunswick, VA.

Pay band 00: $68,293.00 – $81,000.00. Full‑time. Telework may be available on a limited basis.

Responsibilities
  • Lead and oversee library collections, instruction, and academic support services across campus locations.
  • Administer the Library Collection Development Policy, manage budget, selection, evaluation, and weeding of materials.
  • Ensure materials are cataloged and maintained using current Library of Congress standards.
  • Maintain organized, accessible library spaces and oversee audiovisual and instructional equipment.
  • Manage inter-campus and interlibrary loan services.
  • Supervise library personnel, including two full‑time Library Specialists, part‑time tutors, and up to 20 hours of work‑study students.
  • Oversee hiring recommendations, training, scheduling, task assignments, and performance feedback.
  • Ensure compliance with work‑study guidelines, timekeeping requirements, and institutional policies.
  • Foster a service‑oriented, student‑centered environment.
  • Provide information literacy and research instruction through College Success Skills (SDV 100), embedded course instruction, workshops, and online formats.
  • Collaborate with faculty, advisors, and student‑success teams to support academic achievement, retention, and completion.
  • Coordinate library‑based academic support services, including tutoring and research assistance.
  • Deliver reference and research support to students, faculty, staff, and community patrons.
  • Collect, analyze, and report library usage, instructional, and service data for institutional effectiveness, accreditation, and reporting.
  • Participate in and promote the Virginia Community College System’s Information Literacy initiatives.
  • Support accreditation standards related to learning resources, student support, and assessment.
  • Manage and update the library’s web presence and digital resources.
  • Collaborate with appropriate offices to maintain compliance with accessibility and technology guidelines.
  • Participate in regional, state, and national professional library organizations.
  • Present workshops and training on information literacy, copyright, and library services.
  • Serve on college and campus committees as assigned.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Library Science (MLS/MLIS) from a regionally accredited institution.
  • Knowledge of academic library services, reference, research support, and information literacy instruction.
  • Recent experience with an Integrated Library System (ILS) and familiarity with Library of Congress classification.
  • Experience collecting, analyzing, and reporting data for institutional effectiveness and accreditation.
  • Experience managing a library or learning resources budget.
  • Demonstrated supervisory experience, including hiring, onboarding, scheduling, and performance management.
  • Experience overseeing library operations in physical and digital environments.
  • Knowledge of ADA accessibility standards and regulatory compliance.
  • Ability to coordinate academic support services, including tutoring.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and technology skills; student‑centered approach.
  • Ability to support services across multiple campus locations.
Additional Considerations
  • Experience in a community college or multi‑campus academic library setting.
  • Documented experience delivering information literacy instruction online and face‑to‑face.
  • Experience supporting student success, retention, or learning support initiatives.
  • Familiarity with accreditation, assessment, or institutional effectiveness processes.
  • Experience managing digital library systems, web content, or electronic resource platforms.
  • Knowledge of ADA accessibility standards for library services and digital content.
Operational Duties

  • Qualified to supervise employees.
  • Required travel between campus locations.
