Position Overview

Natural Sciences Adjunct Role at Southside Virginia Community College. Part‑time, credit‑hour dependent (up to 12 credit hours per semester). Salary $793.00 – $1,098.00 per credit. Courses delivered on‑campus, online, or hybrid.

Flexible; may include day, night, and/or weekend shifts. Part‑time, credit‑hour dependent up to 12 credit hours per semester or 29 total weekly workload hours.

• Plan, organize, and teach courses using approved syllabi, student learning outcomes, and current best practices in pedagogy.
• Maintain a positive classroom or virtual climate conducive to student learning.
• Lead hands‑on lab experiments, strictly maintaining laboratory safety protocols, guiding students through scientific data collection, and fostering critical scientific inquiry.
• Competently utilize instructional technologies, including the college’s Learning Management System (Canvas), for grading, course announcements, and virtual teaching components.
• Review, grade, and return student assignments, laboratory reports, and exams in a timely manner; provide regular academic feedback.
• Conduct office hours to provide academic guidance and clarification before/after face‑to‑face sessions or via scheduled virtual office hours.
• Follow academic policies outlined in the SVCC Adjunct Faculty Handbook; submit final course grades by college deadlines; report student enrollment or attendance issues as required.

• Master’s degree in Biology (or related biomedical science field) or equivalent; minimum 18 graduate credit hours in the specialty for Biology, A&P, and Microbiology courses.
• Master’s degree in Chemistry or a closely related chemical science field; minimum 18 graduate credit hours in pure chemistry for General Chemistry courses.
• Master’s degree in Physics or a related physical science/engineering field; minimum 18 graduate credit hours in pure physics for Physics courses.
• Demonstrated teaching competence and strong oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to write syllabi and exams; develop learning strategies, curriculum, and assessments.
• Interpersonal communication skills; ability to work with students of varying abilities from diverse backgrounds.
• Understanding of and commitment to the mission of the community college and student success.
• Ability to implement current pedagogical strategies and technical learning platforms effectively.

• Previous science teaching experience at the community college or university level, specifically with face‑to‑face and online/hybrid modalities.
• Demonstrated experience developing or teaching a fully online, asynchronous laboratory course.
• Competency using instructional technologies such as SMART boards, Zoom, and Canvas Learning Management System (LMS).
• Demonstrated commitment to student engagement and academic success.

Some travel may be required. This is a part‑time teaching position with no state and VCCS benefits. Adjunct faculty positions are appointed on a course‑by‑course, semester basis as needed.
