Position Classification: Part-time, 10-month, Faculty, salaried non-exempt

Hours: 2:45 - 3:30 p.m.

- Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays

2:00 - 3:30 p.m.

- Wednesdays

2:00 - 2:45 p.m.

- Fridays

Salary Range: $6,000 - $7,000

Reports to: Director of the Arts, Head of the Lower School

Position Summary

St. Christopher's School, the largest all-boys school in Virginia and one of the largest and oldest boys' schools in the Mid-Atlantic region, seeks a strings teacher for our lower school string ensembles.

Serving approximately 1,000 boys in Grades JK-12 in Richmond, Virginia, St. Christopher's is an Episcopal school committed to cultivating a community that is diverse, inclusive and welcoming. Principal

Responsibilities
  • Lead the 4th and 5th grade strings ensemble on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:45 - 3:30 pm
  • Provide assistance for 2nd and 3rd grade strings ensembles
  • 2nd grade string ensembles meet on Wednesdays from 2:10 - 2:40 pm, and on Fridays from 2:05 - 2:35 pm (also assist with carpool on Fridays)
  • 3rd grade strings ensembles meet on Mondays and Wednesdays from 2:45 - 3:30 pm
  • Create a positive classroom environment in which all boys feel known and valued
  • Plan and prepare lesson plans and instructional materials that facilitate active learning
  • Assess student progress using a variety of formal and informal data collection tools and methods and provide feedback in a timely manner
  • Manage student behavior in accordance with best practices for teaching boys
  • Foster communication and a respectful partnership with parents/guardians during phone calls, and through written correspondence
  • Communicate in a timely and efficient manner with parents, students, and colleagues
  • Engage in continuing professional growth and development, including staying abreast of best practices for teaching boys
Qualifications and Key Skills

  • A commitment to best practices in education, as articulated in the School's Teaching Excellence Document, and a dedication to best practices for boys, as espoused by the St. Christopher's Center for the Study of Boys
  • A clear commitment to diversity, community, and inclusion in school communities, as expressed in the St. Christopher's Diversity and Inclusion Statement
  • Hold at least a bachelor's degree with strong academic record, preferably with a music focus
  • Have prior teaching experience or sustained demonstrated experience working with children
  • Possess the personal traits for nurturing the growth of boys and working cooperatively with adults, including a passion and joy for working with young people, and an enthusiasm for learning
  • Collaborate effectively with members of arts team and the Lower School faculty in general
  • Possess excellent problem solving, communication, and analytic skills
  • Exhibit a growth mindset, be creative and flexible, and demonstrate a sense of humor
  • Accept constructive feedback as part of professional growth and development
  • Model professionalism and integrity at all times
  • Enjoy working with young people, especially boys
Physical Requirements
  • Must be able to circulate among students in a classroom setting
  • Must be able to move from classroom to classroom and from building to building as assigned or required by classroom assignment and activity of the day
  • Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds
