Department: School of World Studies

Department Summary: The School of World Studies in the College of Humanities and Sciences at Virginia Commonwealth University is recruiting a pool of applicants for adjunct teaching positions in the World Cinema program. The School of World Studies will consult the adjunct applicant pool and contact qualified applicants for interviews on an as-needed basis.

Adjunct instructors may be asked to teach introductory and upper-level elective courses in World Cinema. Courses may include broad introductions to world cinema and global film history, as well as electives focused on particular regions, genres, historical periods, filmmakers, aesthetic traditions, or theoretical approaches to cinema.

While teaching needs may arise across the World Cinema curriculum, the program particularly seeks instructors who can teach introductory courses as well as contribute upper-level electives in their areas of specialization.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Meet all designated course instruction guidelines;
  • Prepare and deliver course content appropriate to the assigned World Cinema course for in-person instruction
  • Grade assignments and exams in a timely manner;
  • Respond to student inquiries within 24 hours;
  • Maintain regular communication with students and program faculty as appropriate;
  • Submit final grades according to VCU policy.

Qualifications:

Master’s degree in Film Studies, Cinema Studies, Media Studies, or a related humanities or social science field appropriate to the position;
Academic training, teaching experience, or demonstrated expertise in cinema, film history, film theory, or visual/media culture appropriate to the courses being taught.

Preferred Qualifications

Ph.D. or other terminal degree in Film Studies, Cinema Studies, Media Studies, or a related field appropriate to the position;
Demonstrated record of teaching experience at the university level;
Ability to teach both introductory World Cinema courses and upper-level electives in one or more areas of specialization;
Experience teaching global, transnational, comparative, or non-U.S. cinema;
Experience with in-person, online and asynchronous instruction;
Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment of respect, professionalism, and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU

Salary Range: $1,487 per credit hour
