Job Title: Math Coach

Terms of Employment: Teacher Contract/ 10 months (210 days)

General Description:

The Math Coach provides school-based leadership to advance mathematics development for all students at the assigned school. The Math Coach supports elementary or middle schools by building teacher capacity and understanding of the math curriculum and instructional practices aligned to the Virginia Standards of Learning. The Math Coach is responsible for ensuring high-quality classroom instruction through modeling, co-planning, co-teaching, and providing non-evaluative feedback to teachers.

This position supports teachers and administrators through professional development, coaching, and providing appropriately aligned resources to foster student academic success. This is not a supervisory position and does not include evaluation of colleagues.

• Monitors the instructional program provided by mathematics teachers and provides ongoing professional learning support and coaching to help teachers improve performance and achieve math-related objectives.
• Supports teachers in ensuring the alignment of their lesson plans and instruction to the appropriate math Virginia Standards of Learning and the corresponding Curriculum Framework.
• Facilitates teachers’ use of high-impact, evidence-based instructional strategies, including differentiated instruction for diverse learners.
• Stays abreast of the latest math research, innovations, program trends, and methodologies and implements new strategies as appropriate for the school’s student population.
• Works with new and novice teachers to ensure they have the materials and competencies necessary for success.
• Observes classroom math instruction regularly and provides follow‑up consultation and written non-evaluative feedback to teachers.
• Provides direct support to individual and small groups of students as warranted.
• Analyzes and uses student performance data to identify and respond to the math-related professional learning needs of individuals and groups of teachers.
• Assists administrators in proactively identifying school strengths and areas for improvement in math and recommends responses that maximize student achievement in math.
• Models professionalism, engages in reflection, self‑led continuous improvement, seeks out feedback, and provides constructive feedback to colleagues.
• Ensures all students in the school meet grade level expectations (at a minimum) in math and attain the foundational numeracy skills that lead to college, career and civic readiness.
• Contributes to team efforts by accomplishing related tasks as needed or assigned.

• Postgraduate Professional license with an endorsement as a Math Specialist preferred; or, enrollment into an approved educator preparation program for a Math Specialist endorsement within a year of hire and completion of the Math Specialist endorsement program within third year of employment required.
• Minimum five years of successful teaching experience with at least three years of teaching math at the appropriate grade level span.
