Position Overview
The Department of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering in the College of Engineering at Virginia Commonwealth University seeks candidates to apply for an hourly Research Assistant position focused on the development of functional materials for environmental applications.
Since its inception in 1996, the Virginia Commonwealth University College of Engineering has brought innovative, real‑world engineering education to Central Virginia. Comprised of five different departments plus the Dean's office, the College of Engineering enrolls more than 2,000 undergraduate and 450 graduate students in several degree programs supported by more than 650 full‑time, part‑time, and student employees.
Position ResponsibilitiesThis project aims to develop advanced functional materials as efficient catalysts for greenhouse gas (GHG) capture and conversion. The selected student will work closely with a Ph.D. student to synthesize and characterize functional materials for photoelectrochemical electrodes to capture and convert GHG efficiently.
Job duties include:
- Contribute to ongoing research projects, including aerosol synthesis of materials, electrochemical testing, and data analysis.
- Conduct literature reviews, sample preparation, and process development as needed.
- Participate in weekly group meetings and additional project‑related discussions.
- Master's degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science, or a related discipline, or equivalent work experience that equates to a master's.
- Highly motivated and hard‑working.
- Ability to work on multiple tasks.
- Strong communication skills (verbal and written).
- Prior research experience in chemical synthesis, electrochemical measurements, or materials characterization is a plus.
