Job Summary
Dominion Energy Virginia’s Electric Transmission (ET) System Protection Engineering department is seeking a motivated Electrical Engineer to support the Company’s evolving distribution grid. The primary responsibilities include the design, modeling, and development of protective relay settings for Distribution and renewable energy interconnections. This role involves involvement in industry-leading projects such as interconnecting 5000 MW of solar generation in the next 5 years, the first utility-owned offshore wind project in United States federal waters off the Atlantic coast, STATCOMS, IEC-61850, and large data center load growth.
Job Responsibilities- Learn and apply basic protection philosophy and applications to real-world scenarios.
- Develop protective relay settings for System Protection Engineering (SPE) Distribution protection schemes inside the substation.
- Under guidance of experienced team members, provide technical assistance to engineering and field teams to develop protection and control design packages.
- Provide technical support to conceptual engineering teams, project management teams, and ET Field Organization throughout capital projects.
- Participate in company teams and industry-level organizations to enhance ET's system protection performance.
- Participate in trade and industry organizations and benchmarking activities.
- Support the team with settings peer review activities.
- Provide guidance to newer engineers on applying protection philosophy and application to real-world scenarios.
- Provide advanced technical support to conceptual engineering teams, project management teams, and ET Field Organization throughout capital projects as appropriate.
- Engage with SPE's Engineer Training program and related activities.
- Perform other duties as requested or assigned.
The knowledge, skills, abilities and experience required for entry into this job include the following:
- Associate Engineer: 0-2 years of engineering experience
- Engineer: 2+ years of engineering experience
- Sr. Engineer: 5+ years of relevant engineering experience
- Staff Engineer: 8+ years of relevant engineering experience
- Strong time management skills with the ability to independently plan and organize work assignments.
- Strong oral and written communication skills, including technical writing.
- Ability to work independently or in a team environment.
- Analytical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
- Experience with short-circuit modeling software is preferred.
- Understanding of IEC 61850 communication protocol for intelligent substation protection is a plus.
- Experience with SAP work management systems is a plus.
- Programming skills for automation of system studies (e.g., Python, .NET, C#) is a plus.
- Ability to interpret codes, regulations, and practices.
- Understanding of AC/DC fundamentals, including three-phase power systems.
- Understanding of transmission and/or distribution relay protection concepts is a plus.
Required Degree: Bachelor’s in Engineering
Spring 2026 graduates may be considered for this opportunity.

REQUIRED ENGINEERING CRITERIA: For placement of a candidate in the Engineer job series, the following criteria must be met: possess a 4-year Engineering degree from an ABET-accredited program, or an equivalent qualification as described in the job posting.

For Nuclear employees, ANSI/ANS-3.1-2014 requirements apply with the specified experience levels.
