We are seeking a Civil Project Designer in our Richmond, VA office. As a Civil Project Designer, you will lead design efforts as a project manager or lead engineer for low to moderate complexity projects and collaborate with senior staff for the delivery of larger and high complexity projects. You will work with a team of engineers and consultants to provide engineering solutions and advice to clients to ensure positive outcomes.
Primary responsibilities include engineering analysis, design field inspections, writing reports, preparing permit applications, site drainage and grading designs, and learning the Civil Engineering trade. This role works within the project budget and involves training, mentoring, and collaboration with cross-functional teams to meet project goals and client expectations.
- Direct and train Civil Design Technicians to assist in completing reports, exhibits, plans and specifications, and permit applications as required by the project’s contractual scope
- Lead design efforts for the analysis of civil site design projects for commercial, residential, industrial projects, etc.; utilize engineering software and tools to create detailed designs, specifications, and calculations according to code requirements and IMEG standards
- Complete and oversee permit applications for a variety of municipalities in coordination with the team, Client, and reviewing jurisdiction
- Oversee projects through bidding and construction administration phase
- Interact with clients to understand their needs, gather project requirements, and communicate technical information; build and maintain client relationships through professional communication
- Work as part of a project team to support the execution of consulting projects; lead efforts in project planning, budgeting, and scheduling to meet deadlines and objectives; document design decisions and instructions from clients while monitoring progress
- Analyze engineering problems and propose innovative solutions; collaborate with senior engineers and consultants to develop practical and efficient solutions
- Stay up to date with industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in civil engineering; contribute to research, development, and innovation efforts within IMEG
- Prioritize safety and regulatory compliance in all aspects of engineering work; interpret state and local design criteria and apply to project needs
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to deliver integrated solutions that meet project goals
- Identify potential project problems and seek advice from the Project Manager
- Knowledge of industry standard engineering software, primarily Civil 3D
- Proficient with pipe networking and road corridors
- Proficiency in design techniques, tools, and concepts involved in the production of technical plans and specifications
- Strong technical and analytical skills in civil engineering
- Ability to train and mentor less experienced staff
- Able to lead teams with others using industry standard software for civil engineering analysis and design
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; ability to communicate clearly in oral and written form
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
- Attention to detail and problem-solving skills
- Eagerness to adapt to new challenges
- Proficient with MS Office Suite including Word, Excel, and Outlook
- Ability to travel up to 10% with occasional overnight stays
- Bachelor of Science (BS) Degree in Civil Engineering, or equivalent required
- Engineer-In-Training (EIT) certification preferred
- Minimum 3 years of experience, 4 preferred, in the building design consulting industry
- Associates degree or certificate in Autodesk Civil 3D or equivalent software tools or engineering preferred
- Minimum 7 years of experience, 8 preferred, in the building design consulting or construction industry
