Job SummaryThis role is the top progression level position in the Engineer series. It includes senior to technical expert engineers who perform difficult and complex work requiring thorough knowledge of the subject matter and significant experience within the functional assignment area. The incumbent schedules and coordinates major segments of complex projects to meet cost and time objectives, plans and conducts work requiring judgment in the independent evaluation, selection, adaptation and modification of standard techniques, procedures and criteria.
They devise new approaches to problems, develop engineering criteria ensuring compliance with design standards, provide technical expertise and team leadership as needed, guide less experienced engineers, and may apply intensive and diversified knowledge of engineering principles to major projects with significant impact. They serve as a technical expert on engineering related legal and regulatory issues to outside entities, exercise independent judgment and decision making to solve complex technical problems, coordinate or lead project scopes of work, schedule, develop budgets, track costs, oversee cost and time objectives, and provide technical and constructive feedback into proposed engineering design packages and review for constructability.
The knowledge, skills, abilities and experience required for entry into this job include the following:
- 5+ years of relevant engineering experience
- Full knowledge of engineering theories and principles
- Skilled in advanced techniques and modification of theories, precepts, and practices
- Strong leadership skills with proven ability to serve as team project lead
- In‑depth knowledge of various computer applications, with the ability to perform engineering calculations using applicable software programs
- Strong planning, organizational, and project management skills
- 8+ years of relevant engineering experience
- Extensive knowledge of engineering theories, principles, and practices
- Skilled in advanced techniques and modification of theories, precepts, and practices
- Full knowledge of business/financial and contractual matters
- Recognized expert by other engineers and management in assigned area
- Provides expert technical advice to other engineers and management
- Strong planning and project management skills
- Strong technical and organizational leadership skills
For placement of a candidate in the Engineer job series, the following criteria must be met:
- Possess a 4‑year Engineering degree from an ABET accredited Engineering program based on the year that the Engineering program was accredited by ABET, or
- Possess a 4‑year Engineering degree from an institution outside of the U.S. which is accredited through the country’s own Engineering accrediting body under the Washington Accord as a full signatory, and is a degree that was recognized by the country’s accrediting body on or after the date that full signatory status was achieved, or
- Possess a 4‑year degree in Engineering (non‑ABET accredited), Physics, Chemistry, Math or Engineering Technology and a post‑graduate Engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same Engineering discipline is ABET‑accredited based on the year the Engineering program was accredited by ABET, or
- Holds or has previously held a valid U.S. Professional Engineer license.
