Environmental Scientist - CWA Section 404/401

Position Type: Full-time

Division: Field Operations

Timmons Group is seeking a full‑time Environmental Scientist for our Environmental Group located in our Richmond, VA office. The Environmental Scientist will be responsible for the development, submission, processing, and negotiation of issuance for permits associated with impacts to both federal and state waters. This individual is responsible for the completion of permits that will be submitted to and reviewed by entities such as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ), Virginia Marine Resources Commission (VMRC), as well as Local Wetland Boards (LWB).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Work with environmental staff in developing all aspects of Joint Permit Applications.
  • Interact with Senior Scientists and Project Managers to better understand project components necessary for project permitting and completion.
  • Interact and communicate with regulatory agencies such as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Virginia Department of Environmental Quality, and others.

This individual must be highly motivated, a self‑starter; flexible, detail-oriented, enjoy interacting with employees and clients; willing to work at a dynamic pace to complete tasks and meet deadlines; and share a commitment to our firm’s vision, mission and shared values.

Skills / Requirements
  • Must have a bachelor's or master’s degree in environmental science, environmental law, or a related discipline.
  • Two to four years of environmental science experience.
  • Experience in the natural resources field with an emphasis on wetland and stream permitting and its associated regulatory processes involving but not limited to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ), Virginia Marine Resources Commission (VMRC), and local wetland boards (LWB).
  • Firm understanding of regulatory processes related to surface waters in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Understanding of regulations associated with threatened and endangered species, as well as cultural resources is a plus.
  • Must be organized and possess strong verbal and technical writing skills, and be able to read technical literature and engineering plans.
