Pay Rate
: $50/hr.
-$70/hr. (depending on experience)
Dominion Energy’s System Operations Center is seeking engineers to join our System Operations Engineering team. This team is responsible for the reliable operation and continuous improvement of our Energy Management System (EMS) and associated operator tools. The role supports real-time operations, system modeling, vendor coordination, and project execution to ensure safe and efficient grid management.
Key Responsibilities- EMS Reliability & Operator Support
- Ensure the EMS operates smoothly and reliably to support real-time grid operations.
- Work closely with control room operators to ensure they have the tools, data, and system visibility needed to manage the grid effectively.
- Respond to operator-reported issues and provide timely resolution and support.
- Voltage Management & Switching Operations
- Support operators in maintaining voltage levels across the transmission network.
- Assist in executing switching orders for safely taking equipment out of service.
- Analyze system impacts of switching actions using EMS tools and coordinate with field crews and operators.
- Collaborate with EMS/DMS vendors (e.g., GE) to troubleshoot and resolve system issues.
- Support system upgrades, patch implementation, and performance tuning.
- Manage vendor tickets and ensure timely resolution of software and hardware concerns.
- Ticket Management & Customization
- Manage internal tickets related to EMS/DMS functionality, data discrepancies, and system alarms.
- Implement usability improvements and customizations based on operator feedback.
- Document issue resolutions and contribute to long-term system enhancements.
- Modeling & Analysis
- Model system topology and SCADA data.
- Monitor and troubleshoot Power Flow and Contingency Analysis calculations.
- Perform ad-hoc system analysis using SCADA and Synchrophasor data.
- Automation & Project Execution
- Drive automation of internal processes.
- Manage and execute EMS system upgrade projects.
- Support testing and implementation of new EMS features.
- 3+ years of engineering experience, preferably in Electrical Engineering with a focus on Power Systems
. - Prior experience working with an Energy Management Systems (EMS), ideally at the utility level using General Electric’s software.
- Familiarity with power system fundamentals and advanced concepts such as Power Flow, State Estimation, Dynamics, and Equivalent Network Modeling.
- Prior experience in the electric utility industry, particularly in Transmission System Operations
, is highly desirable. - Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
- Quick learner with strong time management and multitasking skills.
- Must be able to meet NERC certification requirements.
- Hold a 4-year engineering degree from an ABET-accredited program.
- Hold a 4-year non-ABET degree plus a postgraduate degree from an ABET-accredited institution.
