Environmental Inspectors – Virginia
ERM is hiring Environmental Inspectors to oversee environmental compliance during the construction phase of Electric Transmission Utility projects across Virginia. This full‑time, 40‑hour‑per‑week limited‑term position lasts 6 months, extendable.
Responsibilities- Prepare documentation to support requests for variances from environmental permits.
- Prepare and conduct environmental training for construction personnel.
- Conduct field inspections, monitoring, and survey work as directed.
- Interact with and serve as a point of contact with agency officials, regulatory staff, landowners, contractors, clients, and other project members; conduct required agency notifications.
- Review and implement project documents, providing direction and critical judgment on environmental compliance issues.
- Provide technical leadership and support to field staff, coordinating daily schedules and morning construction meetings.
- Assess environmental conditions in the field to evaluate potential impacts from construction.
- Evaluate potential issues and concerns ahead of construction activities.
- Oversee the proper implementation of mitigation measures.
- Conduct environmental sampling (hydrostatic test water, soil, etc.).
- Oversee and verify flagging of wetland boundaries, cultural and biological resource exclusion zones, refueling zones, etc.
- Inspect and document compliance with project environmental requirements by preparing daily written inspection reports with updated photos.
- Participate in various construction meetings.
- Evaluate restoration activities.
- Perform additional tasks as assigned or required.
- Experience working in and throughout Virginia, including VA SWPP Guidelines.
- BS or BA degree or at least 5 years of equivalent environmental inspection experience.
- Understanding of construction (pipelines, power lines, compressor/pumping stations, gas storage fields, wind farms, solar facilities, offshore facilities) gained through field experience.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Strong negotiation and conflict resolution skills.
- Proficient technical skills, including Microsoft Office and digital cameras.
- Knowledge of environmental sampling methods.
- Ability to travel extensively and work 40 to 70+ hours per week in a physically demanding position on temporary assignments.
- Physical fitness: can walk/hike up to 10 hours per day on uneven, steep terrain; carry up to 10 pounds of equipment; work in all weather conditions.
- Unexpired Dual Inspector certification issued by VDEQ or unexpired Inspector for Erosion and Sediment Control and unexpired Inspector for Stormwater Management certifications, both issued by VDEQ.
- ESC inspector certification.
- SWM Inspector certification.
- Experience working within the Power Industry (Electric, Datacenter, Natural Gas, Renewable, Heavy Industrial, etc.).
- 4+ years of environmental inspection, monitoring, or permitting experience specific to linear and/or other energy infrastructure projects.
