Job Overview

Mid-level water process engineer role in water treatment. Focus on conventional water treatment processes such as coagulation, clarification, softening, media filtration, membrane filtration (microfiltration/ultrafiltration), reverse osmosis (brackish and seawater), UV/AOP, ozonation, carbon adsorption, and distribution system water quality. Experience in water reuse, brackish and seawater desalination, bench‑scale development, and pilot testing is desirable.

Key Responsibilities
  • Prepare engineering deliverables: process/mass balance calculations, design criteria/basis of design memoranda, process flow diagrams, process and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), tradeoff studies, and master planning studies.
  • Support multiple projects simultaneously under guidance of senior process engineer, addressing complex technical challenges.
  • Engage in applied research activities involving bench, pilot, and full‑scale testing to evaluate alternative treatment processes.
  • Develop recommendations for treatment processes, equipment, and materials selection.
  • Collect, analyze, and manage data for process design work.
  • Perform moderately complex engineering calculations following standard methods.
  • Apply advanced engineering techniques and problem‑solving analyses with guidance from senior engineers.
  • Demonstrate strong technical writing skills and effective communication.
  • Coordinate with internal and external team members for successful project execution.
Client Focus
  • Understand client interests and drivers through client contact and project leadership interaction.
  • Apply client understanding to work performance and behavior.
  • Support business development and pursuit activities, including pre‑positioning meetings, proposal development, and client relationships.
People Management
  • Support knowledge management and mentor interns and junior engineers.
  • Assist in performance management, mentoring, and recognition for interns and junior engineers.
  • Maintain current knowledge of design guides, standards, systems, applicable codes, and company policies.
  • Apply standards to assigned tasks.
Quality / Continuous Improvement
  • Apply knowledge independently and comply with the company quality program on assigned tasks.
  • Support continuous improvement and change management efforts.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced degree (Master’s or Doctoral) in civil, environmental, or chemical engineering.
  • 5 years of experience in water treatment.
  • Working knowledge of process design for municipal effluent reuse, brackish and seawater desalination, brine management, and related engineering design standards.
  • Understanding of consulting, project execution, client services, and business development.
  • Excellent written and oral communication, learning agility, results orientation, and prioritization skills.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an accredited program.
  • Minimum of 1 year of related work experience.
  • Ability to complete pre‑employment onboarding requirements, including background checks and drug screening, in compliance with applicable laws.
Work Environment / Physical Demands

Hybrid or flexible work options may be offered after the first 90 days of employment based on manager discretion, job performance, and work assignments.

Compensation Transparency

Annual compensation ranges for this role:
State of Virginia: $82,770 – $138,230. Final compensation depends on skills, experience, qualifications, and geographic location.
