Our utility client is seeking a Junior Mechanical Engineer to support its Air Emissions Monitoring Group. This individual will assist with engineering design, drafting, and system modification projects related to Continuous Emissions Monitoring Systems (CEMS) and environmental compliance initiatives across power generation facilities. The ideal candidate will have a Mechanical Engineering degree from an ABET-accredited university, strong AutoCAD experience, and an interest in supporting environmental and power generation operations.
Day-to-Day Responsibilities:
- Create, revise, and maintain engineering drawings using AutoCAD.
- Develop equipment layouts, piping drawings, mechanical details, and as-built documentation.
- Support engineering projects involving air emissions monitoring equipment and associated plant systems.
- Conduct field walk-downs at power generation facilities to collect measurements and verify existing conditions.
- Work closely with senior engineers, environmental specialists, operations personnel, and maintenance teams.
- Assist with troubleshooting mechanical and environmental monitoring equipment.
- Review drawings and technical documents to ensure accuracy and compliance with engineering standards.
- Support project planning, scope development, cost estimates, and engineering documentation.
REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET-accredited university.
- 0-3 years of engineering experience (internships and co-ops accepted).
- Proficiency with AutoCAD.
- Strong understanding of mechanical engineering fundamentals.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and technical specifications.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaborate within a team environment.
- Willingness to travel occasionally to generating stations and plant sites throughout Virginia.
NICE TO HAVE SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
- Internship, co-op, or professional experience within utilities, power generation, manufacturing, or industrial environments.
- Experience working with environmental systems, emissions monitoring equipment, or process systems.
- Exposure to P&IDs, piping systems, instrumentation, or industrial design.
- Familiarity with Micro Station.
- Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification or plans to pursue professional licensure.
- Experience performing field inspections or engineering site walk-downs.
