Position: Senior Actuarial Analyst / Actuary

Job Summary

Markel gives people the confidence to move forward and seize opportunities. This Actuary position partners with Markel’s Bermuda professional lines underwriting team on large, complex risks, focusing on pricing, reserving, and portfolio insights. The role influences pricing, reserving, and strategy in collaboration with underwriters, providing technical actuarial judgment that supports high‑impact decisions.

Job Responsibilities
  • Conduct thorough research and analysis to evaluate lines of business and individual programs, establishing rates and pricing strategies aligned with profitable premium growth and cost‑based pricing.
  • Research new business opportunities when requested and identify potential acquisitions.
  • Forecast reserve estimates on a quarterly basis; report with Finance during quarter close.
  • Communicate findings to actuarial, finance, claims, underwriting, and executive leadership, presenting analyses clearly and reacting promptly to requests for alternative structures or assumptions.
  • Present results of actuarial analyses to meeting attendees, ensuring both actuarial and non‑actuarial audiences have a clear understanding of final results.
  • Collaborate with the Technical Pricing team to validate and calibrate professional liability rating models used in actuarial pricing.
  • Proactively identify and communicate potential actuarial issues to relevant teams.
  • Mentor and serve as a resource for less experienced actuaries, fostering professional growth and knowledge sharing.
  • Monitor rate changes.
  • Conduct periodic pricing studies.
  • Represent the Department on cross‑functional teams.
  • Carry out ad‑hoc requests from product line leaders and executive leadership.
  • Perform other actuarial work as needed.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in mathematics, statistics, or another analytical field.
  • 3–5 years of actuarial experience preferred.
  • 3+ actuarial exams passed, ideally near or newly qualified Associate, with a demonstrated commitment to pursuing Associate or Fellowship designation in the Casualty Actuarial Society.
  • Strong project and time‑management skills, including meeting deadlines and managing resources.
  • Strong communication skills and critical thinking ability to defend actuarial assumptions, decisions, and methodologies.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Ability to balance creativity and sound actuarial judgment.
  • Professional Liability or Commercial Lines experience is a plus but not required.

Pay Information

The base salary offered for the successful candidate will be based on compensable factors such as job‑relevant education, experience, training, licensure, demonstrated competencies, geographic location, and other factors. The national average salary range for the Senior Actuarial Analyst is $108,800–$181,400 with 25% incentive.
