As the organization continues to grow, our client is seeking a Senior Tax Accountant/Tax Accountant to oversee a broad range of tax compliance activities across the holding company and its operating businesses. This position offers the opportunity to contribute to partnership, corporate, international, and indirect tax compliance efforts while helping identify tax-saving opportunities and improve overall tax processes.

Position Summary

This full-time role is based in Richmond, Virginia and reports directly to the Tax Director. The Senior Tax Accountant/Tax Accountant will play a key role in managing both income tax and domestic indirect tax compliance activities, including sales and use tax, personal property tax, real property tax, and business license tax obligations.

In addition to compliance responsibilities, this individual will collaborate with the Tax Director to enhance tax processes, support merger and acquisition activities, perform technical tax research, develop tax exposure models and forecasts, and assist with government audits. The role will also be instrumental in evaluating and implementing AI-powered tools and technologies to improve the efficiency, accuracy, and scalability of tax compliance operations.

Key Responsibilities:

Direct (Income) Tax Compliance
Serve as the primary point of contact with external tax service providers, assisting with the preparation of book-to-tax work papers, state apportionment calculations, and tax payment reconciliations.
Review federal and state income tax returns for accuracy and completeness before filing.
Support tax compliance activities across multiple legal entities and jurisdictions.

Indirect Tax Compliance
Manage compliance processes related to sales and use tax, business personal property tax, real property tax, and business license taxes for multiple operating companies.
Oversee monthly sales tax filing activities through third-party platforms such as Avalara and Vertex.
Assist with monthly reconciliations of sales tax accounts to ensure accurate reporting and compliance with internal accounting requirements.
Maintain and supervise customer exemption certificate records and related documentation.

Audits, M&A, and Tax Advisory Support
Partner with the Tax Director on tax planning initiatives, research projects, legislative monitoring efforts, and new business opportunities.
Support tax due diligence activities associated with mergers and acquisitions.
Coordinate responses to tax authority inquiries and audit requests.
Conduct technical tax research and provide recommendations to management.
Participate in special projects and other tax-related initiatives as needed.

Qualifications and

Experience:

Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Business, or a related field.
Four to six years of tax experience within a public accounting firm.
CPA license or eligibility to sit for the CPA exam preferred.
Experience preparing or reviewing complex business tax returns, including Forms 1065 and/or 1120.
Hands-on experience utilizing AI tools, tax technology platforms, or data analytics solutions to streamline compliance processes or tax research.
Demonstrated ability to work independently while managing filing requirements and deadlines across multiple entities and states.
Strong project management and organizational skills, with the ability to balance multiple priorities and deadlines simultaneously.
Proven analytical and problem-solving abilities, including researching complex tax matters and developing practical recommendations.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel.

Work Environment
