Summary

The Senior Accountant supports the planning, organization, preparation, and maintenance of accounting records related to accounts receivable, accounts payable, CIP, cash, Virginia Retirement System (VRS), and general accounting. Provides financial information to management through research, analysis, and report preparation. Reviews and audits financial transactions and documentation to ensure accuracy and compliance. Performs analytical work and provides technical guidance related to general ledger functions.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assists with the preparation of the Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (ACFR) and other required financial reports.
  • Prepares work papers and analyses to support year-end close and annual audit activities.
  • Performs accounting and other functions in the area of accounting as follows:
  • Prepares and analyzes balance sheet accounts; investigates and resolves reconciling items.
  • Reconciles retirement contributions and payments; prepares and records related adjusting journal entries.
  • Reconciles CIP funds; request and record reimbursement from City of Richmond
  • Reconciles Cash with City.
  • Prepares and enters journal entries.
  • Assists in documenting Finance Department procedures and identifying process improvement opportunities.
  • Reviews internal and external departmental processes related to finance and reports inconsistencies to the Director of Finance.
  • Ensures financial internal controls and the integrity of the data and records are maintained.
  • Collaborates with departments to obtain information and resources needed to resolve accounting issues.
  • Provides support to accounting staff within the department on an as‑needed basis.
  • Develops, updates, and maintains a comprehensive policy and procedures manual for assigned tasks.
  • Supports continuous professional development by staying current with relevant literature, regulations, and best practices.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • Five (5) years of increasingly responsible and progressive experience in government or general accounting.
  • Experience in auditing is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Working knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and the Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) standards and requirements.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), Google applications and other internet-based systems and tools.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, organizational abilities, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to analyze financial data and records and maintain complex, automated, and confidential financial records and reports.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and independently determine work priorities.
  • Ability to work independently with minimum supervision and collaboratively with employees, school administrators, business partners, and community representatives.
Physical Demands

Sedentary Work:
Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects. Work involves frequent sitting, talking, hearing, and the use of hands and fingers to operate a computer, calculator, and other standard office equipment. The employee may occasionally stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, and stoop or crouch to retrieve or file documents.

Visual acuity is required for reviewing financial data, preparing and analyzing reports, and operating a computer with accuracy and attention to detail.

Work Environment

Work is performed in a standard office environment within a school division’s administrative or finance setting. The position involves minimal exposure to environmental hazards or physical risks. Tasks are completed in a climate-controlled workspace with regular access to computers, printers, and other accounting technology. The work is deadline-driven and may involve extended periods of concentration, multiple priorities, and frequent interactions with staff across departments to exchange financial information or resolve discrepancies.
