Our client, a full-service advertising agency with offices in Richmond, VA, is looking to add an experienced Director of Finance to their team. This is a hybrid opportunity for a strategic, hands-on finance leader who will oversee the agency's financial operations and partner with executive leadership to drive sustainable growth, profitability, and operational efficiency. The ideal candidate will bring a strong background in financial planning, accounting, budgeting, forecasting, cash flow management, and project-based accounting within an advertising, marketing, or professional services environment.
RESPONSIBILITIES- Lead the agency's financial planning, budgeting, forecasting, and long-range financial strategy
- Develop financial models and business analyses to support agency growth initiatives
- Prepare and present monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports to executive leadership
- Monitor key financial metrics including revenue, profitability, utilization, overhead, operating margins, and cash flow
- Recommend strategies to improve financial performance and operational efficiency
- Oversee all accounting functions, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll coordination, revenue recognition, client billing, reconciliations, and month-end/year-end close
- Ensure accurate financial reporting in accordance with GAAP and coordinate annual audits and tax filings
- Manage relationships with external auditors, tax advisors, banks, and insurance providers
- Maintain accurate bookkeeping, account reconciliations, journal entries, and financial records
- Oversee client billing, monitor accounts receivable aging, support collections, and partner with Account Management to resolve billing issues
- Review employee expense reports, reconcile corporate credit card transactions, and ensure compliance with company policies
- Develop financial dashboards and KPIs to support executive decision-making
- Manage agency cash flow, working capital, banking relationships, and financial risk management
- Lead the annual budgeting process, maintain rolling forecasts, and provide budget variance analysis
- Lead and mentor the finance team while establishing best practices, improving financial processes, and driving automation initiatives
- Ensure compliance with financial regulations, internal controls, agency policies, and procurement registrations, including SAM.gov and SWaM
- Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field.
- CPA, CMA, or MBA preferred
- 8-12 years of progressive finance experience, including leadership responsibilities
- Experience with in an advertising, marketing, communications, media, or professional services agency strongly preferred
- Strong understanding of project-based accounting and agency financial operations
- Experience with financial planning, forecasting, budgeting, strategic analysis, and cash flow management
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills and proficiency with financial reporting systems
- Experience with ERP, accounting, or agency management software such as Workamajig and Advantage
- Strong leadership, analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills with the ability to drive operational improvement
