Description

The Disciplinary Review Officer provides support functions for law enforcement activities, specifically pertaining to the imposition of discipline. Incumbents manage the process of researching comparable violations of department and city policies; provide recommendations for discipline and produce documents for Human Resources and Executive Staff. Incumbents coordinate and schedule disciplinary procedures, enforcing a range from corrective action/counsel up to and including termination, and ensure tracking and proper filing of related documents.

Incumbents liaise with various internal divisions and units, including Personnel, Internal Affairs, and Human Resources.

This is a non-sworn, professional staff position.

Duties include but are not limited to Supervision Exercised/Received
  • Exercised:
    This classification typically does not supervise other employees but may serve as a lead worker.
  • Received:
    This classification typically reports to a more senior level manager or Deputy Director or Director.

    Other reporting relationships may apply.
Example of Duties

TYPICAL CLASS ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
These duties and percentage of time are a representative sample; position assignments may vary.

  • Prepares, writes, and updates various reports, forms, spreadsheets, and other documentation. 75%
  • Supports and works closely with others to ensure accuracy of information; serves as liaison to internal and external departments. 15%
  • Presents information and trains staff. 10%

Successful completion of an interview and thorough background investigation is required. Please note that the Police Department background process may take up to 45-60 days. An applicant disqualified from the Police background process may reapply a year after disqualification.

Qualifications, Special Certifications And Licenses MINIMUM TRAINING AND

EXPERIENCE:
  • Four years of professional experience in area related to assignment, such as Law Enforcement or Human Resources
  • Bachelor's degree in human resources or public administration, or field related to assignment
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience (approved by the department) may be used to meet the minimum experience qualifications of the classification.
LICENSING, CERTIFICATIONS, And/or OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
  • A valid Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record.
  • Acquisition of a valid Commonwealth of Virginia Driver's License within 30 days of hire.
