Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Emergency Management is currently seeking a qualified candidate to become our Chief Regional Coordinator!

This position is eligible for one day of telework per week. Due to the public-facing nature of the role, regular onsite presence is required.

This role includes emergency response duties; you must be able to reach the region within 30 minutes.

The Chief Regional Coordinator is responsible for planning, overseeing, implementing, and managing all aspects of regional operations. This role directs programmatic, fiscal, personnel, and operational activities within the region and provides overall supervision of regional staff, which may include the Response and Recovery Officer, Recovery and Mitigation Specialist, Hazardous Materials Officer, All-Hazards Planner, and Search and Rescue Specialist. The Coordinator serves as the regional subject matter expert and primary point of contact, establishing and maintaining effective partnerships and acting as a liaison to local jurisdictions, as well as regional, state, federal, and non-government organizations.

This position ensures direct access to the full array of services and assistance offered by VDEM. Additionally, the Coordinator serves as the first level of response during incidents within the region and supports recovery operations, while maintaining 24/7/365 situational awareness for potential or actual threats, incidents, or disasters—both natural and manmade. The role also includes serving as a regional spokesperson, ensuring regional emergency plans remain current, and overseeing the effective use of emergency preparedness grant funds allocated to the region.

All VDEM employees are designated as essential personnel and may be required to work during emergency situations, such as inclement weather, and natural or man-made disasters/events as directed. This may require irregular work hours, work at locations other than the official duty station, and may include duties other than those specified in the employee’s official EWP.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Demonstrated ability to analyze and evaluate the effectiveness of local emergency management programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to direct planning, safety and field operations activities.
  • Ability to accurately assess potential emergency situations and make sound decisions under high-stress conditions.
  • Ability to adapt to fluctuations and changes in program activities.
