Job Duties

This individual will investigate suspected violations of consumer protection statutes regulating certain products, including liquid nicotine and nicotine vapor products, products containing kratom, and products containing tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). The investigator will perform field investigations, inspect retail locations, and conduct consumer and witness interviews. As part of the investigative work, this individual will collect and catalog photographic evidence, documents, and regulated products as may be appropriate.

Where a pattern or practice of consumer protection violations is suspected or found, the investigator will work with Regulated Products Enforcement Unit attorneys to develop and pursue a possible enforcement action. When warranted and as directed by Unit attorneys, this individual will execute necessary actions for seizure, forfeiture, and destruction of regulated products subject to such actions. Secondary responsibilities include investigating suspected violations of other state and federal consumer protection laws and facilitating the resolution of consumer complaints as needed.

This position reports to the Investigations Unit Manager in the Office's Consumer Protection Section. Routine interaction with state/federal officials, businesses, and the general consuming public is required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Qualified candidates should have knowledge and experience in consumer protection laws, conducting interviews and investigations, and facilitating the resolution of consumer complaints.
  • Candidates also should have well-developed oral and written communication skills; a proven ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced, high-volume environment; and the skills to interact effectively with other state/federal agencies and the general public.
  • Proficiency using personal computers is required, including a solid working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and databases.
  • A driver's license issued by the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles is also required.

Additional Considerations

Preferred candidates will possess a B.A. or B.S. college degree in criminal justice, public administration, political science, government, or a related field; or the equivalent combination of experience, training, and education in law enforcement, regulatory enforcement, or investigations.
