Mountain Gateway Community College (MGCC) is a two-year public institution of higher education and one of 23 community colleges in Virginia. The college is supported by the Commonwealth of Virginia; the counties of Alleghany, Bath, Botetourt (northern portion) and Rockbridge; the cities of Buena Vista, Covington, and Lexington; and the town of Clifton Forge. The Emergency Management Coordinator is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining the College’s emergency management program, including emergency preparedness, response, recovery, and continuity planning efforts. This position manages the development and maintenance of the MGCC Emergency Operations Plan (EOP) and Continuity of Operations Plan (COOP), coordinates emergency preparedness activities across the College community, and serves as a key liaison with local, state, regional, and private-sector emergency management partners.

The Emergency Management Coordinator promotes a culture of safety, preparedness, and collaboration by providing training, coordinating exercises and drills, managing emergency response programs, and ensuring compliance with applicable federal, state, and institutional requirements.

Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

KSA's/Required Qualifications

Knowledge of advanced concepts in the field of emergency management; ability to communicate effectively with stakeholders from a wide range of audiences; ability to remain calm and effective in making decisions in stressful situations, skilled in planning emergency exercises and drills, competent in the use of Microsoft Office products including Word, Power Point and Excel; ability to manage records; ability to make effective presentations to all audience levels, ability to foster collaboration across the various departments within the College;

ability to remain flexible and work with minimal direction at all times; ability to relate to, communicate with, develop and maintain effective working relationships with senior level officials within the College community as well as leaders within the profession of emergency management; excellent writing skills; the ability to execute the steps of the Homeland Security Exercise and Evaluation Program; the ability to research, identify, and document best practices within the profession of emergency management;

the ability to pass a background check and hold a valid Virginia Driver’s license.

Demonstrated experience in planning and emergency response activities; experience developing and conducting table top, functional and full scale exercises for a diverse organization; certificates and/or coursework in emergency management, hazard mitigation planning, disaster resiliency, risk management or related topics.
