OverviewThe Cytotechnologist Senior performs the duties of a technical trainer in the cytology laboratory. This role assists the supervisor in training, scheduling, and assigning duties appropriate to each cytotechnologist, coordinates quality control procedures, troubleshoots, maintains procedure manuals, and documents method evaluations and inventory control in primary responsibilities. The role performs In Situ Hybridization techniques; assists on deep Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA) and Ultrasound Guided Fine Needle Aspiration (US‑FNA);
examines cell samples and makes primary diagnoses on all cases (GYN, non‑GYN, FNA). The role must demonstrate problem‑solving initiative and good judgment to reach quality decisions as a leader for the cytology staff in primary areas of responsibility. Additionally, the role is responsible for ordering equipment and office supplies for Cytology, CDC, and Surgical Pathology (if requested) and maintains awareness of new technologies and evaluates tests for accuracy, precision, and economy.
Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire
- Certified as a Cytotechnologist by the American Society for Clinical Pathology within 6 months of employment into position.
- Current CT (ASCP).
- Minimum of three (3) years of clinical work experience as a Cytotechnologist.
- Depending on laboratory assignment, work experience may be specific to a particular specialty area such as deep FNA, US‑FNA, and In Situ Hybridization technique.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Health Science (Cytotechnology Track) from an accredited program.
- Master’s Degree in Health Education, Cytotechnology or Clinical Lab Science from an accredited program.
- Makes diagnostic decisions on cytologic cases and applies the appropriate criteria to correctly interpret the cases.
- Makes correct decisions about handling of samples for optimal preparations.
- Identifies and solves problems with initiative and good judgment to reach quality decisions as a leader for the cytology staff.
- Demonstrates public relations ability, interpersonal skills, and professional telephone manner.
- Is organized, flexible, and attentive to detail.
- Communicates effectively with all levels within the organization.
- Exhibits business decorum and appearance.
- Supports team concept.
- Demonstrates strong leadership capabilities.
- Communicates effectively and expresses ideas clearly.
- Has excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Follows appropriate communication channels with cytology supervisor and management.
- Assumes the responsibilities of the supervisor in his/her absence.
- Lifting less than 20 lbs.
- Prolonged standing.
- Strong recall, reasoning, problem solving, hearing, clear speaking, legible writing, reading, logical thinking.
- Ability to handle multiple priorities and frequent intense customer interactions; adapt to frequent change.
