Primary FunctionThe outpatient Registered Dietitian performs each step of the Nutrition Care Process (NCP): patient assessment, nutrition diagnosis, nutrition intervention, monitoring and evaluation. The RD applies, participates in, or generates research to enhance clinical practice, and utilizes information technology to manage knowledge, problem solve and support decision making. The RD develops nutrition care plans and educates diverse patient populations through the application of knowledge and principles of disease management, prevention, and behavioral change.
EssentialJob Functions
- Assessment: screen, prioritize, and process patient referrals; coordinate assessment of nutritional status using anthropometric, biomedical, and nutrition‑focused physical findings; determine risk for diabetes or manage pre‑diabetes or diabetes; review clinical information; conduct consultations.
- Planning: assist in program calendar development, identify priorities, target dates, and implementation strategies; review current literature to support preparation of education materials; develop individualized nutritional care plans; manage and review protocols for nutrition education.
- Implementation: work collaboratively with physicians and the interdisciplinary team to provide appropriate care; provide nutritional education; adapt teaching to patient needs; facilitate group educational sessions; document treatments; refer to other resources and arrange follow‑up.
- Communication: effectively communicate with physicians, health‑care team members, patients, families, peers, and community partners; participate in interdisciplinary meetings.
- Evaluation: evaluate patient comprehension and compliance; identify key performance indicators; participate in measurement of these indicators; evaluate workload results to identify trends.
- Team Development: work effectively within an interdisciplinary team; provide case‑study consultation, in‑services, and workshops; promote awareness of Bon Secours Health System services; participate in staff and committee meetings; provide consultation to community groups; mentor dietitian students and other health‑professional students.
- Professional Development: maintain professional competence through continuing education and development; stay current with evidence‑based methods; attend professional conferences, e‑learning, and journal reviews; participate in interdisciplinary committees and clinical projects.
- Related Duties: model Bon Secours values; maintain confidentiality; facilitate education sessions; assist with planning and attend special events.
- Baccalaureate of Science in Nutrition from an ACEND accredited program.
- Successful completion of an ACEND‑accredited Dietetic Internship Program (at least 900 hours).
- Current Virginia Driver’s License.
- Experience in community, primary‑care settings, and/or with diabetes patients.
- Certified Diabetes Care and Educator Specialist (CDCES).
- Proficiency in evidence‑based primary care delivery, health promotion, risk reduction; leadership, organization, research, evaluation, time‑management, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Proficient with computers, especially MS Word, Excel, Outlook.
- Ability to update knowledge and skills through technology‑based opportunities, courses, workshops, and conferences.
- Multi‑tasking skills related to efficient primary care delivery.
- Excellent verbal and written communication; open‑minded and non‑judgmental; knowledge of Bon Secours Mercy Health policies and procedures.
