Job OverviewThe Speech Pathologist II is an experienced therapist who can independently adapt intervention to meet each patient's needs. The role provides coverage in a primary setting and, as needed, throughout hospital, rehabilitation, and outpatient settings with minimal to moderate support and training from mentors, peers, or the manager. The Speech Pathologist also assumes basic leadership roles within the department, demonstrates flexibility, exercises good judgment, problem solving, and works collaboratively with colleagues.
Responsibilities- Provide coverage in primary setting and, if needed, in hospital, rehab, and outpatient settings.

- Participate in department projects or events efficiently and productively.
- Attend educational activities and provide in-service education to other staff.
- Develop skills to provide student supervision under the mentorship of an experienced student supervisor.
- Participate in research activities at the department level, mentored as needed.
- Perform independent actions for patients with moderately to significantly complex communication and/or swallowing disorders, including scheduling therapy, selecting assessment instruments, administering assessments, interpreting results, completing documentation, planning and carrying out treatment strategies, developing long- and short-term goals, performing patient/family/staff education, reporting at conferences, and terminating therapy when appropriate.
- Manage or mentor and provide advice or guidance regarding clinical skills, professional practice, ethical behaviours, billing, caseload management, educational opportunities, documentation, and patient care.
- Provide supervisory responsibilities, if applicable, including student supervision by SLPs with CCCs deemed competent by the Department Manager or Student Program Coordinator.
- License (or licensure eligible) from the Commonwealth of Virginia as a Speech and Language Pathologist (SLP).
- Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) in SLP from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA).
- Current license by the Commonwealth of Virginia as an SLP.
- Current CCC in SLP.
- CPR certification.
- Minimum of one (1) to two (2) years of experience.
- Previous clinical experience with evaluation/treatment of neurogenic, motor speech, linguistic/cognitive communication disorders, and swallowing disorders.
- Previous experience performing swallow studies including MBS and bedside assessments.
- Previous experience planning and executing treatment.
- Minimum of two (2) years of previous clinical experience.
- Previous experience with tracheostomy management related to swallowing and communication disorders.
- Previous experience managing complex swallowing and/or communication, linguistic/cognitive disorders.
- Minimal novice experience with dysphasia including MBS and bedside swallow evaluations.
- Previous work experience in a similar practice setting (e.g., critical care, long‑term care, outpatient).
- Previous experience with computer‑based documentation systems.
- Master's Degree from an ASHA accredited program in Speech and Language Pathology.
- Completion of required learning exchange courses.
- None specified.
- Schedule frequency and intensity of therapy.
- Select assessment instruments and administer assessment.
- Interpret results and complete documentation.
- Plan and carry out treatment strategies; develop long and short‑term goals.
- Perform patient/family/staff education and report at patient/family/team conferences.
- Terminate therapy when appropriate.
- SLPs with their CCCs may provide student supervision if deemed competent by the Department Manager or Student Program Coordinator.
Position Requirements
- Able to provide services to multiple settings after orientation and competence assessment, including covering outpatient, rehab, and inpatient areas in addition to the primary area of practice.
- Possible weekend rotations required.
- Age‑specific groups served:
Varies based on assignment.
- Lifting 20–50 lbs.
- Prolonged standing, prolonged sitting, walking (distance), climbing (steps, ladder, other).
- Strong recall, reasoning, problem solving, hearing, speak clearly, write legibly, read, logical thinking.
- Adaptability in a fast‑pace, noisy environment; ability to handle multiple priorities and frequent, intense customer interactions.
