Department Summary

The Department of Pathology at Virginia Commonwealth University Health System seeks a full-time Cytogeneticist/Molecular Geneticist to serve as Associate Director of the Cytogenetics Laboratory and Associate Director of the Molecular Diagnostics Laboratories. These growing laboratories within the Division of Molecular Diagnostics offers diagnostic testing for a full spectrum of conventional and molecular cytogenetic services, molecular genetics and molecular diagnostics including (but not limited to) referrals from oncology, pediatrics, obstetrics/gynecology, and transplant programs.

The Associate Director position includes a Virginia Commonwealth University, School of Medicine affiliate rank title of Assistant or Associate Professor, commensurate with experience.

Duties & Responsibilities Clinical

The Associate Director will provide high-quality clinical service in genetic and genomic testing and will share with the Cytogenetics Director and the Molecular Diagnostics Director the daily testing review process for the clinical service, provide advice to the Directors and to the Managers of the Cytogenetics and Molecular Diagnostics Laboratories in resolving technical difficulties with testing procedures, and will develop, validate, and implement clinical testing.

The Associate Director must have competency in chromosome analysis, FISH, and genomic microarray/copy number variant interpretation in both constitutional and oncology settings. The Associate Director will collaborate, when appropriate, with faculty and/or VCU Health clinicians in the development of new tests. This individual must have the ability to clearly communicate diagnostic results/testing needs (orally and in writing) with faculty members who utilize the diagnostic testing services, after consultation with the Directors and upon request of the Directors.

The Associate Director must complete forms for national consortium groups (for example, the CALGB and COG) regarding the results of diagnostic testing completed in the labs.

Service

Participation in tumor boards and other conferences with colleagues is required. Participation in departmental, institutional and national committees when necessary.

Teaching

Supervision of residents is required. Will also contribute to the education of LGG fellows, residents, medical students, and ancillary staff. Participation in undergraduate and graduate education required

Research

Scholarship primarily in genetics through presentations at national meetings, developing clinical research collaborations, contributions to peer-reviewed scientific literature, active participation in appropriate professional organizations is required.

The faculty member will report to and work closely with the Director of the Clinical Cytogenetics Laboratory and the Molecular Diagnostics Division Chair to further the mission and vision of the Department of Pathology.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications
  • M.D. and/or Ph.D. degree
  • ABMGG certification or eligibility in either Laboratory Genetics and Genomics, or Clinical Cytogenetics and Clinical Molecular Genetics dual boards is required
  • Knowledge regarding regulatory issues as they apply to the field of cytogenetics and molecular genetics
  • Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment of respect, professionalism, and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU

Preferred Qualifications:

Clinical experience and an interest and/or ability in research and scholarly activity as displayed through publication in professional journals and presentations at national meetings.
