Job Description

The Sonographer performs ultrasonography and is responsible for administering high frequency sound waves and other diagnostic techniques to humans of all ages. A Sonographer/Technologist provides ultrasonography procedures, producing images for interpretation by a licensed practitioner.

Core Competencies
  • Perform all duties of a Sonographer I.
  • Provide accurate explanations and instructions to patients and families using age‑appropriate language and verify understanding and agreement to the exam.
  • Perform ordered exams or therapy in accordance with established imaging protocols while respecting patient comfort.
  • Adhere to policies and protocols to ensure expected outcomes are met.
  • Document deviations from protocol and/or patient‑specific issues that may impact image quality.
  • Notify the appropriate health care provider when immediate clinical response is necessary based on findings, patient condition, or other concerns impacting safety.
  • Timely complete all required post‑processing, image display, preliminary reporting, and transfer for physician review.
  • Demonstrate timely order closure, charge entry, and PACS QA completion.
  • Routinely cover open shifts as appropriate based on competency level.
Advanced Competencies
  • Perform all ultrasound‑guided biopsies.
Knowledge and Competency
  • Experienced and competent in routine and complex studies.
  • Complete understanding of technical standards, scope of practice, department and health system policies, and safety and service standards.
  • Complete understanding of imaging equipment, image processing software, instrumentation, and ancillary patient care equipment.
Education, Certification & Experience

The position requires certification by the American Registry of Radiology Technologists (ARRT) as a sonographer ARRT(S) or RDMS or CCI certification in medical sonography or RDCS certification in cardiac sonography or RVT certification as Vascular Technologist. BLS for Healthcare Providers is required. Must have successfully completed a 6‑month orientation. (Individuals with at least one year of experience can be hired directly into this role.)
