Dispatcher - Ambulance Transportation Coordinator

Richmond, VA

Starting pay: $25.75/hr based on experience. An additional $2/hr differential for select shifts.

Job Summary

Under general direction, utilizes sophisticated system status management computer systems which monitor, update, and control the location and movement of ambulances. Represents GMR as a primary decision maker to our clients, personnel, and other allied agencies. Participates in assisting local leadership in meeting relevant goals and performance indicators. Candidates must work under pressure and demonstrate higher‑than‑average attention to detail. Deployment Coordinators are responsible for competency in operating all relevant communication, information, and operational systems.

Functions / Duties
  • Utilizes sophisticated system status management computer system which monitors, updates, and controls the location and movement of units.
  • Coordinates and supervises the activities of any personnel assigned.
  • Reviews incidents, accidents, deviations/exceptions, and other issues; escalates to local leadership as necessary.
  • Ensures proper performance of telecommunications, computer, recording and other equipment.
  • Attends meetings and maintains positive, professional interactions with all employees.
  • Works cooperatively with the Field Supervisors, Operation Supervisors, Operations Manager and field crews to ensure that system coordination issues are handled efficiently.
  • Attends continuing education programs as needed.
  • Updates relevant systems with daily deployment, staffing, and route changes.
  • Ensures all ordered transportation requests are complete and accurate during the call intake and review process including patient coverage information.
  • Provides complete and detailed call intake information.
  • Provides guidance to road crews as necessary.
  • Participates in developing deployment strategies and analysis.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Excellent telephone skills and customer service etiquette.
  • Basic knowledge of health insurance processes and terminology to assist with identifying needs for prior authorizations.
  • A “yes we can” approach to problem‑solving.
  • Ability to exercise discretionary authority within given limits with logic and consistency.
  • Knowledgeable in matters of employee health and safety and mindful of loss control.
  • Counseling skills to help employees understand company and personal needs, values, problems, alternatives, and goals.
  • Ability to effectively communicate observations, opinions, and conclusions to accomplish tasks and fulfill team needs.
  • Effective oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Familiar with local/regional geography.
  • Type at least 30 WPM.
Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 2 years of related experience in healthcare or transportation logistics.
Preferred Experience / Qualifications
  • 2 years of EMS industry experience.
  • Basic understanding of medical terminology.
  • Current EMT and CPR certification.

Responsibilities
  • Understand and adequately implement Emergency Medical Dispatch concepts as published in Principles of Emergency Medical Dispatch.
  • Allocate EMS resources properly using decision‑making rules and approved protocols.
  • Ensure completeness and accuracy of paperwork and shift data entry.
  • Generate applicable reports and verify accuracy.
  • Assist in locating incident scenes and selecting the safest, fastest route using available locator aids.
  • Relay instructions from supervisors, messages, and emergency information.
  • Maintain knowledge of company policies, procedures, rules, regulations, and memorandums.
  • Follow established parameters for receiving service requests.
  • Operate all assigned equipment including computers, printers, 911 devices, recording devices, telephones, etc.
Minimum

Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • At least one year's experience as an EMS or public safety dispatcher, or minimal medical training or telecommunications experience.
  • Skilled in reading and writing English.
  • Clear communication on the radio and telephone.
