Structured Cable Network Engineer

Location: Richmond, VA

Duration: 10+ Months

Local candidates only.

Local Richmond, VA candidates required due to onsite requirement.

Candidates must possess a clean driving record (to be verified) as the role involves field work within the state of VA, driving either a leased or a state vehicle.

Candidates must maintain insurance coverage during this engagement (to be verified).

Candidate must be able to pay for room/board while traveling, to be reimbursed by VDOT. Gas card provided for gas only.

Travel may include some overnights, with notice.

Onsite interviews strongly preferred.

Overview

VDOT’s Information Technology Division seeks an IT professional to provide network services, including:

  • Troubleshooting
  • Monitoring
  • Engineering
  • Cabling (Data/Voice)
  • Evaluating performance
  • Optimizing system performance

The selected candidate will design, direct, review, implement, improve, engineer, and cabling (network/voice) activities and will work with vendors to develop and implement solutions, develop policies and guidelines, troubleshoot network failures, analyze network capacity, manage vendor relationships, support agreements, and validate network billing related to all aspects of the network based on Network and Telecommunications standards and best practices.

Responsibilities
  • Coordinate and interact with multiple vendors for problem resolution and networking issue diagnosis
  • Design, implement, and support multi-site networks
  • Evaluate network requirements and performance for large-scale networks
  • Install, test, and inspect deployed data communications systems
  • Install, migrate, and support data communications installations
  • Manage all phases of network installation and administration
  • Research and document communications technologies, topologies, and trends
  • Communicate effectively with internal and external customers (verbal and written)
Qualifications
  • Experience in network engineering with analysis of network requirements and performance for large-scale networks
  • Experience in data and telecommunications, including installing, testing, and inspecting deployed data communications systems
  • Experience installing, migrating, and supporting critical, multi-site networks is a plus
  • Knowledge of wireline and wireless technologies and standards, including fiber optics, T1, DS-3, MPLS, cellular/5G, CDMA, TDMA, VoIP, TCP/IP, UDP, ICMP
  • Strong understanding of IP networking concepts (subnetting, routing)
  • Experience coordinating with multiple vendors for problem resolution
  • Ability to research and document communications technologies, topologies, and trends
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Proficiency with MS Teams, Word, Excel, and Power Point
  • Working knowledge of LAN, WAN, WAP, Cradle Point / Net Cloud, and cabling standards
