The State Corporation Commission (SCC) seeks an Insurance Rates and Forms Examiner who has a passion for public service and an interest in regulating insurance to provide Virginians with access to reliable insurance protection. Joining the Property & Casualty Division within SCC’s Bureau of Insurance (BOI), the Examiner reviews and analyzes rule, rate, and form filings applicable to commercial casualty lines insurance to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.

- Conduct detailed review and analyses of complex and advanced rule, rate, and form submissions including new and innovative coverage types
- Review and analyze complex pricing structures and rating models, evaluating rate algorithms and determining compliance of non-traditional rating variables
- Prepare complex reports to convey and explain regulatory requirements and any amendments necessary to resolve submissions
- Communicate with regulated entities, in writing and verbally
- Maintain records of submission in SERFF (online database) and the electronic binder inventory to ensure program accuracy
- Participate in internal and external meetings; respond to requests for information; and work with other sections and agencies in the review of rates and forms
- Serve as a technical resource to members of the Commercial Casualty team, other P&C staff, and division leadership
- Assist in the development of statutes, regulations, administrative letters, and section procedures
- Perform related work as required
- Professional experience in property and casualty insurance with knowledge of insurance terminology, forms, policies, rate making, contracts, and/or products
- Considerable knowledge and understanding of commercial casualty insurance
- Ability to review and analyze information in a detailed, thoughtful, and inquisitive manner
- Strong critical thinking skills with ability to identify and resolve areas of noncompliance that are difficult to detect and resolve
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities
- Ability to communicate clearly, concisely, and professionally, both verbally and in writing
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with others in a courteous and professional manner
- Ability to consistently make meaningful contributions to group projects and work in a team environment
- Ability to establish and maintain professional working relationships with SCC staff, attorneys, industry personnel, and the general public
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office products
- Some knowledge of the laws, rules, and regulations governing the operation of insurance companies and products
