Life & Health Insurance Rates and Forms Examiners
Anticipated Salary Range: $60,000-$75,000
Salary Commensurate with Qualifications and Experience
The State Corporation Commission (SCC) seeks two Life & Health (L&H) Insurance Rates and Forms Examiners who have a passion for public service and an interest in regulating Virginia’s insurance industry. Joining the SCC’s Bureau of Insurance (BOI), the Health Insurance Rates Examiner reviews individual and small group health (ACA), accident and sickness, Medicare Supplement, and long-term care rate submissions and the Life Insurance and Annuity Forms Examiner reviews life insurance and annuity policy form submissions.
Prior to insurance products being marketed to the public, the L&H Rates and Forms Examiners determine the filings’ compliance with applicable insurance laws, regulations, and administrative rules through a detailed and thorough review. The SCC offers a hybrid telework schedule, long-term career growth, and professional development opportunities including on-the-job training, certifications, and designations.
- Review and analyze insurance rates or policy forms
- Determine compliance with Virginia statutes, administrative letters, and regulations
- Identify deficiencies in the filings and correspond and meet with companies to obtain information, corrections, and amendments
- Maintain clear and accurate records of filings in SERFF and other general office software applications in accordance with section procedures
- Communicate with insurers verbally and in writing about results of a review
- Collaborate with Commission staff, industry personnel, and agencies
- Respond to internal and external inquiries and requests for information
- Stay informed on federal and state rules and regulations and complete continuing education in the insurance industry
- Participate in meetings, conferences, special projects, etc.
- Perform other duties as assigned
- Professional experience in life and health insurance; knowledge of insurance company operations, practices, and procedures; and/or knowledge of the laws and regulations applicable to life and health insurance, including annuities and supplemental products
- Ability to read, review, and analyze insurance policies, rates, and related forms
- Ability to interpret and understand relevant sections of Virginia insurance laws and regulations
- Exceptional research and comprehension skills, including analysis and the application of critical thinking skills
- Ability to manage tasks independently and remain focused on work for extended periods of time
- Ability to work in a team environment
- Willingness to ask questions, conduct research, and seek answers
- Ability to communicate clearly, concisely, and professionally, both verbally and in writing
- Ability to establish and maintain professional working relationships with SCC staff and industry personnel
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office products, including MS Excel for the Rates Examiner
- Knowledge of the laws, rules, and regulations governing the operation of insurance companies and products is a plus
- Insurance related certifications and designations are a plus
- A college degree is desirable but not required with sufficient professional experience
