Overview
Position Summary and Development:
The Emerging Store Manager (ESM) is a developmental leadership role designed to prepare associates for potential Store Manager opportunities within the Walmart US store operations environment. The ESM trains and develops across merchandising, people leadership, financial management, customer experience, and community engagement. The developmental assignment is expected to last up to 12 to 18 months. Associates should maintain mobility within their assigned region for Store Manager consideration and potential placement.
Additional job-related responsibilities may be assigned as needed.
- Train and develop within a store environment in retail operational acumen, people leadership, merchandising strategy, financial management, customer experience, and community engagement in preparation for a Store Manager role.
- Assist in managing the store s financial performance by learning to authorize and manage expenditures against budget; monitor sales and profit goals; analyze economic trends and community needs for budget forecasting; generate, review, and act on business reports and profit-and-loss statements.
- Support sales by ensuring effective merchandise presentation, accurate and competitive pricing, proper signage, and appropriate in-stock and inventory levels; assess economic trends and community needs.
- Model, enforce, and provide direction to hourly associates and managers on customer service approaches to resolve customer needs, complaints, and issues within company guidelines and standards.
- Analyze and assist with staffing plans to meet workload and performance goals; participate in timely implementation of staffing plans, talent pipelines, and succession planning.
- Initiate, direct, and participate in community outreach programs; encourage associates to serve as good community members; establish and maintain relationships with key groups as company representatives; promote company-sponsored programs, events, and sustainability efforts.
- Uphold Open Door Policy by meeting with associates, researching issues, reviewing policies, and providing resolutions; proactively seek associate feedback.
- Lead and direct the store s management team by supporting objectives, communicating goals, monitoring performance, and identifying training and development needs.
- Ensure compliance with policies and procedures; analyze and interpret reports; implement and monitor asset protection and safety controls; maintain quality assurance; oversee safety and operational reviews; develop action plans to correct deficiencies.
- Support execution of multiple business plans and projects by identifying needs, developing and communicating plans and priorities, removing barriers, measuring progress, and adjusting performance; demonstrate adaptability and continuous learning.
- Foster partnerships with stakeholders across the organization (e.g., Market Managers, Regional leadership, Merchandising, Human Resources, Asset Protection); develop and sustain organizational objectives.
- Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor s degree in management, business administration, retail management, or financial management and 2 years experience in a management role within a retail, operations, or distribution environment, with supervising, evaluating, mentoring, and developing managers/supervisors; managing workloads; participating in hiring and promotion of employees. - Option 2: 4 years experience in a management role within a retail, operations, or distribution environment with similar responsibilities.
- 2 years general management experience, including financial accountability.
- For facilities that sell firearms: successful completion of a firearms-specific CBC and Firearms Authorized Training; for facilities with only ammunition and state-specific requirements: certificate of eligibility.
